Loomis 853/854 vs 893/894

Post by Matt_3479 » Wed Jun 13, 2018 12:52 pm

Just curious as to why go one route over the other? Mostly curious as to why the longer 7’5” rod seems to be more popular. I’m always seeing people recommend 893/894 if you were to get just one high end rod. I’m right on the edge of grabbing either the 853/854 or one of the 893/894 just have to decide between those 4. I was thinking of going more the 4 power as it’s more universal from what I’ve been told and I found a used 803 that might be able to grab for super cheap to cover the 3 power

894 is where it's at. the 853/854/893 are all underpowered to me. the 873c is sick also.

Thank you. What’s the big difference between th 854 and 894. Seeing as they are both 4 powered rods you’d think they’d be similar

I don't have an 894 but I've seen more than a few comments about the NRX 894 being a little tip heavy.

I have a current GLX 854 and a current GLX 893. I generally use the 854 in shallower water with heavier cover (mostly lily pads) and the 893 in deeper water with not as much cover to dunk tx rigged plastics but more often than not they are both on the deck and are used side by side. Either rod can handle a 5-6 lb largemouth without difficulty. The 3 has a noticeably faster tip than the 4. I also like to drag football jigs around but don't use either of these rods for a jig over 1/2 oz plus trailer. I use a Megabass XX Perfect Pitch or Tour Versatile for heavier football jigs.

On the versatility front I'll also use my 893 for bombing 5"-6" swimbaits, 3/8 oz chatterbaits and Whopper Plopper 110s. For me the 894 is really just a plunk-and-dunk rod.

I don't have an 853 mostly because I have a bunch of other 7' MH rods. I plan on selling a couple of these rods and adding a GLX or NRX 853 to replace them.

Thank you sir! What do you mean by a “plunk and dunk” rod? It’s funny everyone’s got there own views on the rods. The 894 seems to be the general consensus as to which rod I should purchase. I currently have a 7’6” 13 fishing envy black flipping stick which is an awesome rod for my heavy cover and thick mat applications. And a kistler helium lta 7’ medium/heavy fast that I’ve been using for my bottom contact but it feels a little under powered when throwing 1/2” jig and trailer especially near cover. Was looking to use the rod for open water to light cover, for 3/8-1/2 jigs mainly, Texas rigs, soft plastic, small swimbaits/paddletails, chatterbaits and such.

Pitching tx rigged worms, lizards, beavers, creatures, etc around cover such as lily pads, patches of submerged cabbage and laydowns. These are these are predominant forms of cover for largemouth where I live.

In my world this is an 853 / 893 but if you went with one of the 4's, you probably wouldn't be disappointed.

893 cannot handle 1/2 oz jig or t-rig.

It's at the top end of the range if a big trailer is added to a jig but to say it can't handle a 1/2 oz lure is simply not true.....

I have a 843 but have sold off all 844's. The 843 I use for spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, chatterbaits and even Swim baits on jig-head. Nothing wrong with any of these rods in my book.

However the rods I fish are multiples in the 894, the 893 and a few Kistlers in 7'3. Why, because as others have said I am pitching or casting jigs and plastics and senko's and I find the extra length gives me great leverage fighting fish around hydrilla. after I battled fish with the 844 and 894 for a day, I sold my 844.

Something else I notice, easier to pull a hung jighead over a rock with longer rod.

893- I have thrown 3/4oz chatterbaits on it and it worked far better then expected. Still, 90% of the time I have a shakey head on mine. Just over 1/4oz total

894- Yes tip heavy but nothing 2 quarters in a butt cap did not fix. My last day in FLA in April was throwing 10 inch mag trick worms on 3/8oz head. Had one that was 9.4oz. I normally don't have reason to throw rigs this big on any rod but the 894 just ate this up \:D/

Thank you, gives me something to think about for sure! I don’t want to purchase one and wish I got the other. I know with it being my most expensive rod I’ll want to use it for anything and everything I can. But I really do see myself using it more towards lighter cover, rock edges, around fallen trees and open water. I love throwing senko’s as well which I forgot to mention and have been getting into the shaky head quite a bit. But like mentioned heaviest jig would be 1/2oz and trailer. With my kistler being little on the light side I figured the 894 might be a better option to cover the mid weight of the spectrum.

I use my 893NRX for t-rigs with a 1/4 or 5/16 weight, mostly with a beaver. I always have a 3/8 or 1/2 jig tied on my 894NRX. Both work great in their application. Dont have a 853NRX or 854NRX, have a few glx rods to fill these spots. Do have a 873NRX and would say I like it a lot also. It would also handle the jigs fine a well.

From what you see that I want to do with it, would you recommend one over the other 893 or 894

If you are looking to throw 3/8-1/2 oz jigs go with the 894, it will also throw 3/8 oz t-rigs too. The 893 will most likely be close to your other mh Kistler rod, although I have not used that rod.

I will echo that the 894 is much more powerful than the 854. You would expect them to be similar but the amount of power is not even close...despite the same 3/4 oz upper end lure rating. 854 is more like a MH to me, and 1/2 oz jig with trailer is pushing it for my taste, where the 894 can handle 3/4 or even 1oz no problem.

Well i am going to look at the rods and put them in hand this weekend. It’s a bit of a drive so I’m unable to look through the week. But as long as I can get the deal it’s worth the drive. I just checked and numbers are getting low. They might be sold out of the 894’s atleast the website shows that. So hopefully i can find one when I get there!!

There’s another store I’m going check to see if they have any instock to atleast get my hands on them. I want to feel them to see how they feel compared to my kistler which might help me make my decision as well
