Rod similar to NRX 901s

Post by Gloomis34 » Thu Jun 07, 2018 7:11 pm

I’m glooming for a 7’6” medium light spinning rod similar to the NRX when they had that mode any suggestions would be great.

St Croix legend elite 7’6 mlxf would be worth looking into. I have this rod only in the avid line and love it for drop shot and Ned rigs. Also great for throwing Shad rap 5s early in the season.

If budget isnt much concern, Take a good look at the Daiwa Steez AGS 76MMLFSA (7-6” M/ML). I think this rod would be a little more powerful than the 901S though. I have this steez rod and absolutely love it. It excels at many finesse applications from its relatively light tip, but has lots of power in the butt section. Sensitivity is right up there with the best of the NRX!

I've been eyeing that rod for a while now.

With either rod it’s going to be a multi use rod I walk up streams and rivers for smallmouth and brown trout also going to be fishing Lake Erie and Presque Isle bay a lot this year so the extra length will be nice I have the Gloomis conquest 902S already and it’s an amazing rod just looking to add another rod that will handle lighter baits and both the St. Croix and daiwa Steez AGS look to fit what I’m looking for

What your use would be is exactly what i use the 76 steez for.

Tanker smallmouth and encounters with ridonculous brown trout. A friend uses the 901 and side by side I like the steez.
I'll take the Steez all day every day from an all day bottom bouncing and twitching jerk baits perspective. I like the grip and balance better. And the versatility is nice being very comfortable at throwing 1/16 up to 5" senkos and more.
If there is a difference in sensitivity...It isn't much..and it hasn't cost me any fish.

And i like having a fore grip....like a full friggin fore grip...that's nice for all day fishing....gives you room to grip the rod and use different wrist angles when twitching jerk baits all day hundreds of casts per day. And with a 7 ounce reel....the tip weighs nothing so thats an added plus.

I own two conquest 902s and two 76 ml/m steez AGS rods. Plus the 76 ml xfast elite. I really like all 3 for different uses. None are going anwhere anytime soon. They make up the core of my spinning rigs.

The 902 and 76ags are considerably more power vs the ml xfast elite. They sit between the ml and medium sc rods in power. The elite is faster tipped also.

I use the elite for light (1/16-1/8) hair jigs and light ned rigs.

The sc would get my vote as most like the 901s.

Did they discontinue the NRX 901S? I have one and use it a lot. I toss lightweight cranks (Shad raps, etc.) and light jigs for walleyes predominantly. I really like it for Ned rigs too. I’d love a 900S if they made one...

I hope they didn’t discontinue that rod!!

Not good. What other models did they discontinue? I’m sure the 902 as well, since I was planning on picking one up for a little bit heavier stick cranks for walleyes and heavier jig and plastic combos. Friggen bummer...
