Need help ( Bottom contact rod)

Post by Tackleshack » Fri May 18, 2018 7:00 pm

I am looking to up grade to better rods. I want to spend the most on bottom contact rods. I would like to stick with Megabass or NRX.
I want one for 3/8 to 3/4 oz jigs and One for shakyhead/finesse jigs. Thanks for the help.

Would agree 100% with the NRX852s. But would also throw the NRX894 in the mix for the jig rod. Love both of these rods.

Great selections so far. You may also consider the Megabass Addermine in the US Destroyer series as your spinning rod. I use straight FC with them, unless the FMJ is being fished around heavy grass, then I'll go straight braid. I do not like braid to FC leaders in general, so avoid them as often as possible.

Second the FMJ opinion. I'd also venture to say Orochi XX Enforcer for finesse jigs and shakey heads. I've thrown down to a Ned rig and up to a 3.8" Keitech Swing Impact Fat on mine, with minimal difficulty. I use 15lb J-Braid with an 8 or 10lb fluoro leader.

Out of current availability the consensus for megabass is definitely FMJ possibly even Valdivia feel like a quicker tip :big grin: NRX no explanation needed. You can venture and try a K2 blank or production rod from Phenix, or power tackle or Kistler which both utilize NFC blank technology and you definitely would be ignorant for not thinking that would be a way to go either in my IMHO action subjective/relative to personal requirements of course.

A kistler zbone 7H would be dope. Prob Nrx of the spinning combo.

NRX 894 or Valdivia. Have both. Like the feel and balance of the Valdivia better, but the 894 sets a good hook.

I'm not sure of your preference (spinning vs casting), but you don't have to use a spinning rod for your shakeyhead combo. The NRX 852C is an excellent choice for a shakeyhead rod if you prefer a casting rod. You just have to have a good reel and use the correct size line. Plenty of people have gone this route. Good luck with your search.

I bought an FMJ this spring and so far it has been in my hands maybe half the time I get out fishing, I just can't put it down. Almost every time I go to try a new presentation/lure and am thinking "ok, this is asking too much" the rod surprises me with how versatile it is. If all my gear disappeared it would be the fist thing I replaced.

This is my second season with my FMJ. I originally bought it thinking it would just do the 1/2oz+ jig duties but the thing does 3/8oz+trailer so well that it's my designated go-to jig rod for everything now and my other jig rod is collecting dust in my office. Just a fun rod to fish with all the power you'd ever need in a lightweight package. Nearly perfect for my needs.

for me, you are NRX 894 and NRX 893 zone.

I use my 894 for jigs and plastics. I will go down to 1/4oz at times if I am pitching to a laydown or grass. Normally I am 3/8oz to 1oz.

The 893 is my Shaky head rod. I typically fish a tw rig of 5/16oz (zoom trick worm, 3/16oz head/hook). I have not fished a 1/8oz total weight shakey in years but I''d pull out my old GLX 852 spinning if I had to; so NRX 852 in modern times.

I like the Kistler product as well. Very competitive with NRX or really anything. I have Helium 3 and 2015-17 era zbone both 7'3h rods. I can pretty much interchange them with the NRX 894.
