Looking for my first 2 baitcaster!
Looking for my first 2 baitcaster!
I’m looking at getting myself my first baitcaster, something to do a little everything thing I guess. Second rod will be for pitching and flipping. I’ve never done it but I’m super intrigued by that style of fishing. First rod I’m looking into getting is a dobyns champion xp 734 sh with a diawa tatula sv tw in 6.3:1. Second rod I found a 13 fishing 7’6” envy black heavy on sale today for a price too good to pass. I hope this rod will work for my intentions. I’m thinking of getting a second tatula in a higher gear ratio or a concept C in the 7.3:1. What’s everyone’s opinions?
Re: Looking for my first 2 baitcaster!
I tend to like a 7:x for moving baits and an 8:x for bottom bouncing. Once you learn to use baitcasting equipment well you will understand the control improvement you have over spinning. It was likely 2002 that I had like 90% spinning gear. I'm not sure I even picked up a spinning rod in 2017.
My reco is you look around at reviews of the diawa product and ask some questions about ability to pitch 1/4 to 1/2oz rigs which would be what I pitch 90% of the time. Years ago I thought Abu and Daiwa were both less reliable for pitching then Shimano. Brake systems change though. Shimano changed brake systems a couple of years ago and they are not as mindless to set-up as they were in say 2008.

You just cant beat the simplicity of Daiwa's Magforce in combination with the SV spool. Once dialed in, they are nearly impossible to backlash, even while pitching and skipping. The Tatula SV in 7.3:1 gears would be great for all-around use and the 8.1:1 is great for bottom-contact and pitching/flipping duties. I like the 8.1 for pitching weightless plastics, as well.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

Thank you very much! I’m pretty much focused on the diawa tatula sv tw just wasn’t sure what gear ratio to get. Was really interested in he 13 fishing concept c for the flipping real do to the bull dog drag. I was told I can change the bearings in it to the Z bearings and it makes a world of difference too.
