Dobyns Champion Extreme HP

Post by Carruth8 » Fri Dec 15, 2017 9:26 am

Need some input on the Champion Extreme HP 703C Med/Hvy & 704 Hvy. I have the Fury 703C, it seems to fish closer to a Medium than a Med/Hvy. So I was wondering if anyone knew if the Champ Extreme HP 703C Med/Hvy is also more on the Medium side? Looking for a more traditional Med/Hvy, so to speak, and maybe the 704C would be closer to what I’m looking for? Thanks guys in advance for your input!

What are you intending to use the rod for?

I feel like I can use the 703 and 704 pretty interchangeably...

T-rigs wit’s a 1/4oz weight, jigs 3/8 - 1/2 and probably toss some frogs as well, but mainly bottom fishing. I love the tip and how my Fury 703 loads up, just curious if the Champion Extreme HP series fish the same way, as far as rod power goes, the Fury series does? This Fury rod is my first Dobyns rod. I’ve been impressed with how it handles, so once I saw the Champ Extreme HP & just how sharp it looks, I’ve made it a mission to save up for it. So I guess my next question would be, is the jump up in price worth it?

I think you could get away with a 4 power rod if your not fishing heavy cover with the frog and jig. If your fishing heavy cover, I would suggest a 5 power rod...either a 705 or 745. I think the 4 power is the most versatile rod in the line ups...but maybe over matched in heavy slop/pads. For about the same money you could get a 735 Fury for frogging and a Champion 744 or 734 for jigs and T-rigs.

I have the 2nd gen extreme's in 704,744,745,784 and in the 4 powers they fish more MH and the 5 a H power even though you can fish alot of the same baits on them . I mosty fish 1\4 and 3\8 T rig and jigs on the 704 . But this year I've been skipping docks 1\2 and 5\8 jigs and small trailers and it does great . I was surprised it handled them ,The 704 fills great in hand , very light and balanced , good power for big fish and sensitive . The HP is supposed to be a little lighter , crisper and and a little more sensitive .
