Which G. Loomis GLX Dropshot Rod

Post by Greg64 » Thu Nov 16, 2017 9:25 am

For those that have them, which of the two G. Loomis GLX Dropshot Rods do you prefer, the 820S, rated for 4# - 8# line, or the 822S, rated for 6# - 12# line? Also, do you fish any other techniques with these rods? I'm just learning to dropshot; so, any guidance would be appreciated.

I have the 822 and I like it very much. The 820 is a little too whippy for my tastes. I don’t really use my drop shot rod for anything else. A drop shorvrig is always tied on that one.

It's a dropshot rod for me only. Now having said that, I like to throw grande bass baby snakes on a trokar finesse hook or roboworms. My brother also has the same rod and the older Shimano crucial dropshot rod. He goes more to the GLX now just because it has that much more backbone to it. Especially when fishing for largemouth. It gives me a lot more confidence and peace of mind when I'm fishing around some vegetation or structure that I know can turn the fish and have more control when trying to move them away from any possible dangers zones(pads, timber and etc).
Good luck with your decision

May want to clarify how you dropshot. Vertical when you are positioned over fish or do you prefer to cast it and out and work it back to you?

It wasn't listed in your list but the 852s would be worth a look especially if you cast the drop shot out and are wanting a rod that is versatile as well for other finesse presentations. Most of the rods you noted are more or less one or 2 trick ponies

I can’t comment about the GLX rods, but i do own a couple NRX 822DSR rods. Besides drop shoting with them, I also use them for darterhead fishing. I like the action of the rods for lightweight open hook techniques.
