Anyone give an updated comparison GLX893 vs NRX 893

Post by JAB50 » Fri Nov 03, 2017 1:53 pm

Trying to get some updated info from everyone. It will be primarily because 1/4oz-3/8oz jig rod! I already own the newer GLX models 842,843,844 and 853. Also looking for a review on the Nrx852s vs Glx852s?
Thanks

given you have many of the newer glx models, I recommend you get the NRX 893. The 893 NRX is legendary and if you don't see a big diference vs. the glx models you own, you can conclude it is all branding and in our heads then resume buying more GLX models ;)

by the way, the NRX 893 is super for your stated purpose. Mine see's mostly shakey heads and senko's because of where I fish not because the NRX is not good with light jigs.

By the way DavidSA,
I bought a Kistler HE3 7'3 xFast because of your recommendation on here a few months ago. Used it last week. Very nice nice stick and super sensitive. I did miss a bunch of fish though. I was throwing a 1/4oz keitech tungsten jig with a 3" rage craw. I was pulling the hook out.Was just to powerful of a stick for that application. But, for 3/8 up applications(cc rig, footballs and etc) it will be money for me! Thanks for the info you gave everyone on it.Well, Goldrod's recommendation that is!
ha

excellent! clearly the HE3 H is not ideal for finesse jigs like the NRX 893 would be but I am not having any issue presenting lures this light or landing fish. Sometimes the fish are not hitting real well. Several weeks ago, I was out trying out a new zbone 7'3H and I was missing fish. I felt them but could not hook them. Then I got lucky and hooked a 5 inch pan fish using a 5 inch worm. I have caught a number of fish on that HE3 using finesse spinnerbaits with braided line. Give it a second chance.

Interested in how you find the sensitivity vs. your new GLX. My conclusion is that at least the HE3 model I own is more sensitivity then my old school GLX rods.

DavidSa,
It's right up there with the GLX's. I think the GLX is a little more sensitive though. But, they are two very different powered rods. I use my GLX 853c mostly for 3/16oz Texas rigged baits with 12lb flouro. It's phenomenal. The H3 is much more beefier rod and I use 14lb flouro on that. Not exactly an apples to apples comparison.
FYI, I also have the previous generation GLX 843c. The newer GLX 843 is definitely about a half power softer than the previous one. More tip flex but still shuts down about a third of the way down. Definitely more sensitive in my hands than the previous generation. I was throwing Spro aruku shads(65&75's) on it. Rod performed flawlessly. The prior generation would've been way to stiff for that application for me. I caught several bass, white perch and yellow perch on it.
And this why I have the dilemma on adding to my arsenal. I'm definitely going to get a NRX893. But, the spinning rod has my head spinning. Really trying to get a good review of the GLX852s against the NRX852s in the same applications. The gap in power ratings between the Glx vs Nrx was considerable at one time. I believe that gap has narrowed with the new redesigned GLX! But, I keep hearing that certain rod models (GLX893 vs NRX893) are vastly different. Or haven't narrowed the gap as much compared to say the Nrx843 vs. Glx843(are very close to each other now)!
Thanks for all the help again! Sorry for being long winded!
Also, in my opinion. If they put recoil guides on the GLX; a lot of people would possibly ditch there Nrx's for the GLX on a bunch of models. Just an opinion! Everybody might like jelly or jam. But, most will like a different flavor/certain flavor!!

indeed from your report the GLX may be as nice as the NRX now. If I go back to the time when loomis had the BCR GLX series with recoils and the NRX rods were just coming out, I had 2 of the same models and they were very close in sensitivity but the NRX had a softer tip. If was hard to compare the rods exactly because of the difference in tip.

By the way, I had a NRX 852s briefly and still have a BSR 852 glx. I kept the BSR because I did not use spinning rods much and felt the BSR has a stronger butt section which was better for senko's in light cover. Now the BSR sits on the shelf because I use baitcasting for senko's. If you have interest in a nice BSR glx with recoils, shoot me a PM.

Thanks for the info! The Nrx still has a softer tip than the newer GLX's. But, the GLX tip has definitely gotten softer than the previous generation with more flex a little further down the blank. But, still has a nice butt section to it!

NRX 893 is a great jig rod, but to me 1/4 oz is too light for it.

likely many guys think 1/4oz is too light for a MH rod. I have owned maybe 10 different MH rods and they all handle a 1/4oz rig about the same. So the OP can simply test that rig on his MBR 843. If he likes it, then the 893 is about the same. if not, then he needs a 2 power rod.

My 1/4oz rig is normally a 1/8oz jig head and zoom trick worm. I am guessing this about 1/4oz. I sometimes go 3/16oz head and same worm. Either way with a 2016 Met and 30# braid I can cast that rig a long way. I would not get more distance practically speaking with a 2 powered rod and if I was not fishing braid, I could not get a good hook set with the 893 because I'm casting too far. I would agree completely the 893 is near optimal distance wise at 3/8 to 1/2oz based on my testing several years ago.

If you asked me to fish a 1/4oz rig and 8# FC line on a great Lake, I go with maybe the GLX 892. Fishing the same rig in Florida, I go 30# braid and a MH rod. Water and line are very important factors.
