G. Loomis GLX Casting Rod 7' Heavy 844C MBR
G. Loomis GLX Casting Rod 7' Heavy 844C MBR
Would this make a good combo rod for throwing Carolina rigs and hollow bodied frogs?
Re: G. Loomis GLX Casting Rod 7' Heavy 844C MBR
For frogs I'd say go for it but personally for me I like a longer rod for c-rigs

I just received this rod a few days ago. It's rated to handle up to 3/4 oz. I don't know if I'd feel comfortable frog fishing with it though. It would handle the casting just fine, but mine never gave me the impression I could horse a fish out of the slop with it that some frog fishing has. I may be way off as I have little use with it though. In the Loomis line, I wouldn't feel comfortable using anything lower than a 5 power for frogs.

I use an IMX 844 MBR (the model before the IMX Pro) for hollowbody frogs and horny toads among a few other moving bait techniques around grass that require braid. It performs fine for all that I mentioned, however I believe my IMX is rated up to 1oz.

The new GLX series is rated up to a 1 oz and I am pretty sure the old one was as well. Not sure why your rod says 3/4 unless you are actually referring to the 843.
I had the older IMX 844 and liked it but was never wowed by it when used for frogging. It would work for C-Rigs but there are better rods for both. I would almost look at the 894 if you wanted to say in the GLX series.
I use my 844 GLX for jigs, swimjigs, chatterbait, and spinnerbaits.

I'm at work and was going off TW ratings and had the 843 clicked. My bad. Thanks for the correction.Fishing4Fun wrote:The new GLX series is rated up to a 1 oz and I am pretty sure the old one was as well. Not sure why your rod says 3/4 unless you are actually referring to the 843.

I've used an IMX 844 for frogs with no problems

10 years ago I had a deck full of 844's but in 2017 I think better options exist for both c-rigs and frogs. To your question, the old model could do both and I used it for both. I assume the new model with same ratings could do the same.

NRX 873 is what I frog and carolina rig with. Excellent for both.

Yes but at a totally different price pointDChiWildcats wrote:NRX 873 is what I frog and carolina rig with. Excellent for both.

I shared in PM that I feel the Kister HE 7'3 exfast heavy is a great c-rig rod and works the frog very well. The Kistler at $220 on sales is a tough act to follow. Actually Goldrod himself gave me this tip about 6 months ago. I'm a NRX fanboy by heart but for frogs and c-rig, I think the HE3 more then meets the need.

After joining TT, I waded into the loomis waters buying glx 803 and 844. The 803 was paired with my first steez and the 844 got a calais. Still have the 844 and the calais. My son uses that setup almost exclusively now, but every once in awhile, I steal it from him. That rod & reel combo are magic, bullet proof, and can throw just about anything. Nrx and megabass have provided greater technique specific(damn you monkey)....but the glx 844 is a reel keeper.

That rod is so under the radar of rods it is crazy.. A absolute pleasure to fish with!

So I got rid of my IMX 844 and replaced it with the GLX 844 over the winter. Having limited use with the new GLX, only threw 3/8oz spinnerbaits, I'm not convinced that it has the same backbone as my old IMX 844(model previous to the IMX Pros). Anyone have thoughts on this? I wanted to use it for hollow body frogs and horny toads among other moving baits with braid. Maybe it's just the fact that it feels much lighter than the IMX.Mike son wrote:I use an IMX 844 MBR (the model before the IMX Pro) for hollowbody frogs and horny toads among a few other moving bait techniques around grass that require braid. Based on past experience, GLX has always felt softer and more forgiving than IMX when comparing the same models between the series. However, GLX has always lived up to the power rating despite the impression it was softer. I've not done any comparisons between the current IMX and GLX MBR models to know if the same holds true today.Mike son wrote:So I got rid of my IMX 844 and replaced it with the GLX 844 over the winter. GLX has always been more fishable for me because of that softer feel.
I would, in a heartbeat, use the MBR844C GLX for frogging and Carolina rigging... and throwing buzzbaits, jigs, paddletails, TX rigs, horny toads, walking baits like the Diamante, oversized square bills... it is the epitome of an all purpose heavy powered rod. The MBR lineup in general is underappreciated in today's technique specific world.
