NRX 872s or GLX 892s

Post by jj_ranger » Mon May 01, 2017 7:35 am

looking to add another rod to fish mainly shakeyheads 1/8-3/16 in 15-25 ft of water. just wondering which would have a softer tip. i've saw a few reviews of the NRX 872s vs the NRX 852s with the 872s having a softer tip where it's longer.

ive heard the same about the 872. i have the 852 that i love for shakey heads (and almost anything in its weight range) so im sure you will be happy with the 872. i'd get the NRX over GLX.

It's a matter of preference for me, as I don't like the reel seats on the GLXs. I have three NRX 852s and they are fantastic for anything in that weight range in both deep and shallow water. I'm going to add the 872s this year, as I don't see much of a difference in action from the 852, but I'd like the added length.

i believe i'm going with the nrx 872s. can't go wrong with an nrx, i hoping the nrx 872s is a little softer than the 852s in the tip section. anyone out there got the nrx 852s that can compare the 872s?

I have both an use both extensively for smallmouth for the past few years. The 872S feels very similar power wise to the 852S, the only real difference being that the 872S has a slightly slower tip due to the extra length. To some users this would give the illusion that the 872S is less powerful than the 852S however I dont really agree as they feel very similar loaded up with a fish on. It really comes down to the fact that the 852s shuts down faster into the backbone. Again, the extra length and slightly more forgiving tip on the 872s allows it to fish both tubes as well as finesse extremely well.

Sensitivity IMO are about equal in my hands - and off the charts. Personally, if i was fishing into deeper depths 20ft+ i would definitely take the 872S.

thanks for the input, that's what i was hoping the difference would be. i like the additional length of the 872 vs the 852. that's the main reason i think i'd like the 7'5 892s, i just wonder if it wouldn't be too slow of a tip to be able to get a good hook set 20+ feet deep with 6-8lb mono line.

You're welcome. I know for a fact that i have no issues at all with hooksets in deep water with the 872S. I have pinned smallies in 50ft of water on the 872S with 15lb braid and 12ft long 8lb flouro leader using a tube or 1/2oz dropshot, zero issues. In fact i need to watch how hard i set the hook with that braid. I personally wouldn't use monofilament line with a rod like an NRX for bottom contact. I would stick with straight flouro or braid to flouro leader. Depending on your reel's drag quality, the 872S will have no problems protecting 6lb line.

As for the GLX 892S I haven't fished this one, but seeing that it has an ex-fast taper I don't think it would be too slow in action. I bought one of the new GLX DSR spinning rods earlier this year when they first came available and didn't like the handle feel at all, so i sent it back. I personally like the NRX better.
