Rod for 1/16 jigs and soft plastics.

Post by Isaiah20 » Thu Apr 27, 2017 5:08 am

I have a G Loomis CR842-2 with a Daiwa SS Air I use to trout fish with. Now I am looking for a rod for stream smallmouth throwing 1/16 jigs and soft plastics. The Loomis does not have the butt strength to deal with smallmouth. I am thinking that a Phenix Recon Elite 682 would fit the bill. What do you guys think?

Th recon would be good. A Major Craft Corzza 692ML or 672L would also be good and likely about 100.00 or so.

Or a Volkey 68L/bfs. I got mine for 150 shipped.
This is the way.

Both the Volkey 65UL 68L are great but hard to source. The Zodias BFS 68L may be a good alturnative but may be to stiff for a 1/16 jig and small trailer as it is only rated down to 1/8 oz.

I have a Phenix PHX-C682L that I use for small plastics and micro-jigs. The 1/16oz low end is a bit optimistic, but it will throw a Trickworm + hook (so .235oz) very well with light floro. When I started weighing plastics I was shocked at how heavy they are, even a 3" senko with a tiny hook is closer to 3/16 then 1/8.

I have used my Phenix for smallies a lot last fall, the largest got was maybe 18", but the rod handled him well but at the same time it's still fun to catch smaller bass and large sunfish with.

I am thinking Kistler Ned Rig Special. I can put in a preorder as they are out of stock. 4-10# and up to 5/16.

Food for thought, you can order Major Craft speedstyle off the American website, think shipping was around 30 bucks for the cheapest option. Was recently looking for a similar rod, but ended up with a Megabass Hyuga 64L from the tackle trap. Received it today, so no reports on it yet.

I also have the 64L hyuga and it has really impressed me as a bfs rod.

Won't lie, the initial impression of the hyuga seems like it will be the perfect action for those small keitech jigs I plan to throw. I have never used a Kistler, but I'd like to hear your report if you end up with one.

As I do more and more research, I keep coming back to the simple fact that I don't want micro guides. Braid to leader knots don't pass through well enough. I am thinking Recon is the way to go. Unless something's there is something in the G Loomis line that would better suit my pursuit.

I'd consider ditching the leader before the micro guides for BFS.
This is the way.

I have the 682L with a purple alphas/ sv spool and use it for just about anything I used to throw on a spinning set up. true 1/16 is a bit optimistic but 1/16 jighead + plastic might be do able, haven't tried it though. I can it can throw 1/8 road runners and unweighted trick worms with no problems. the recon is a safe bet and in any case if you don't like it you can always sell it and try something else. good luck , please post what you end up with

I could put my SS Air on the rod instead of the Chronarch/Yumeya Spool.

Yea, I have a sv105 on my C682L and it is great all arounder finesse set up. My finesse spinning combo still trumps it for spots where I have to make a lot of challenging casts, but I find myself reaching for the casting combo more often than not.
