shrink wrap for Dobyns rods

Post by reelblues » Fri Apr 21, 2017 6:03 am

I bought some Dobyns and want to put the shrink wrap on the grips. Wondering if anyone has done it and what size did you use? I got a measurement of about 1 inch for the handle on my rods so I was going to go with the 30 millimeter wrap which should just go over the handle but might be close. Any input appreciated.

Mil spec shrink wrap with a 3:1 shrink ratio is by far the toughest, only comes in a few colours...

However the clear with the rubberised criss cross tape is the grippy stuff you want.

Hermetically sealing shrink wrap sticks like the proverbial and provides the best sealing with cork.

With the clear wrap, it's not UV stabilised from my previous dealing with it however you can see if water gets in under it and starts going mouldy under it.

Pros and cons IMHO.

Accu Cull Grip Saver. I have three rods done with it. It sticks, no slipping, only enlarges the grip slightly and is durable as all get out.

That's the kind of wrap I was talking about. I went ahead and got 35 mm diameter as it should shrink down past 1 1/8 inch.

Just a follow up in case someone is thinking about trying this like I was. I got the 35 mm and fit it over the handle and put it over my stove top and it shrank right down and fit great. Easiest mod I've ever done. I think the 35 mm would fit just about any bass rod handle.

Does this retain the apperance of cork handles similar to the daiwa neopren coated knobs?

No, not at all. It comes in colors and is rubber, not anything like clear shrink wrap you use in the kitchen.
