2 or 3 power GLX?

Post by sweden14 » Sat Feb 25, 2017 9:28 pm

Considering adding my first GLX to my collection of rods but looking for some advice on which power.

I'm considering a rod to handle weightless 5" senkos, 1/4 oz and under Texas/Mojo/Rage rigs, finesse jigs and the like. Would be fishing grass and around some stumps, but certainly not in the heaviest of cover. Due to boat limitations, I'd need to stick to the 80x, 84x or 85x lengths. LIkely will pair with an SV103.

Whatdya think?

I'd do the 853. I owned the 853 (never fished it) and it can handle all of those baits. It has some backbone has well.

I can only compare the GLX 853 to to the 852 NRX. I have never fished other Loomis rods.

The GLX I speak of is the 2016 model

I would get an 843. I like the taper on my 842, and the rod just feels more alive/sensitive than the 893 I tried, by quite a bit too. But the 853 would work fine as well.

I got an 842 MBR per Bronzefly's advice for the exact same applications your'e thinking of. Couldn't be happier with it. I got one with a fast taper instead of extra fast because I need a little more versatility, I wanted to throw some small moving baits with it as well. I paired mine with an SV105 and that is one tough lightweight little combo.

Same reel I have on mine. I use mine for jerkbaits, spybaits, and light bottom contact

I handled(not fished) all the new GLX rods at a show in Suffern NY. I personally would not use the 842c for 5" soft stick baits especially if you need to t-rig them around moderate cover. Definitely move up to the 843c IMO, on another note the 844c was my favorite GLX I handled, extremely versatile will have one soon enough.

I have a 843 coming and hoping it will be my new spinnerbait rod. We will see when it gets here, hoping next week. \:D/

If you are talking about a JWR rod, then I think the 2 power rod would work. If you are talking about the MBR, then I would go with the 3 power. The older 2 power MBR rod that I had did not have enough backbone for my tastes.
