Frog Rod ideas????

Post by tohatsu30 » Mon Feb 13, 2017 12:00 am

I am a NRX rod user thru & thru. However, I don't want to put that kind of money into a frog rod. Any suggestions for a cheaper frog rod that isn't a dawg? Looking for something longer, 7'6.

Do you have an idea of the most you'd like to spend on this frog rod? Lot of price points between 0 & NRX...

Dobyns 735 in your line of choice. The MB Perfect Pitch. The Steeze frog rod is another popular pick.

I've never heard of a 7'6 frog rod.

Do a search for 'frog' in the rods sub forum, selecting 'topic titles only'.
There's been some killer in-depth threads on frog rods over the past couple of years.

Here's one of many- http://forums.tackletour.com/viewtopic. ... og#p508224

I use the dx746, love it and not looking back, but that might be overkill for a frog rod if you are on a budget.

There is something interesting coming in the 2017 US Megabass Destroyer series along these lines :D I'd agree that the XX Perfect Pitch is an awesome frog rod and the 7'2" length works out nicely.

Really?
No 7'6 Frog Rods?
Come on, there are plenty. Cashion and
Power Tackle make them. Daiwa (AGS) makes an even
longer frog rod. Also, every rod
maker out there makes flipping/pitching
sticks in that length.

IROD Air 754
IROD Genesis 754 (I own and love)
IROD Fiber 754

I'm sure there is a Fitzgerald or Hammer that comes close to that bill. Cashion and Power Tackle make a 76. Loomis "Frog Series" has a 79. Falcon has Bobby's Frog Rod which is a 7'10".

The Hammer Rods 7'6" Extra Heavy is a great frog rod too, and well under $200 shipped to your door from The Tackle Trap!

How do you fish your frogs, I'm curious, as it's a technique I use sparingly. For me it's a tip down technique, not jerkbait down, but leaning down quite a ways, anything over 7'4" would be too long for me.

I fish hollow body frogs by dragging and
twitching them over Lilly pads. Rod tip
up presentation. Not much walking can
be done in the thick cover I fish. I'm tall,
6'5, so a longer rod isn't too much for me
to handle.

That's exactly how I fish a frog and in the same conditions. Some of my best fish come from deep in the pads in skinny water (there's a massive lily pad field at the mouth of a creek here). You can literally watch the fins and wakes leaving the spot if you try to get too close.

Since you're an NRX guy, I'd look for the 916UBR. I've had the most success fishing that exact presentation with that rod. It can rocket a 1/2oz hollow body, and drive double hooks home at the end of a bomb cast.

Talk to Gary at the tackle trap and see if he has any demos or floor models!
