The 701MMHXB is not a megatop type. Even though it is rated similarly the tip is not nearly as soft as those tend to be. The rod has no problem with the baits I have been throwing which are from 1/8 to 1/2 ounce and it has a really strong backbone. As Mr. Ehrler intended, it is right between a conventional medium and a medium heavy rod so I think it is really versatile and can be used for a lot of baits and techniques. I have used it mostly to fish 2.75 inch tubes with heads from 1/16 to 1/8 ounce, as well as Hula Grubs with 1/4 ounce heads and regular jigs between 1/8 and 3/16 with trailers. I was playing with it the other day with a big 1/2 ounce spinner bait with a colorado blade like I use night fishing and thought it was gonna thump my heart into palpitations.

The rods are now on Daiwas web site. A lot more information including more videos about the rods there.

Performance wise, I have no doubt these will be winners, but does anybody else find them as ugly as I do? Not a fan of the grey/gunmetal thing...

When I first saw the rods I wasn't a fan either. I won't say now that I think it's as appealing visually as most other Daiwa rods I have, but after fishing this rod for over a month and catching numerous smallmouth over 3 pounds, including a 4-2 today, I don't care if it was painted two tone purple with lime green pinstripes, I love it!!!!

they're not the most visually appealing rods to me, but it's kinda nice to see something other than black rods with eva split grips.

I had the chance to fondle the new rods at the classic and actually hold the two different guide trains in my hands for weight comparison and wow is the AGS even lighter the regular Alconite guide train and NO FLEX in the AGS guides which I was told they are easier to break than the regular guide train. Color doesn't matter to me as long they aren't orange!! And the new Steez Aluminum is AWESOME!!

As someone else mentioned, they remind me of the old TD-X series of rods, which I love the look of. I still have the 6'3 ML spinning rod (later sold as a dropshot rod), and I use it regularly when I'm wading rivers or bank fishing little ponds. I liked the look of those when they came out, but my years of using the rod have made me even fonder. To each his own, I guess.

99% sure I'll be picking this up Daiwa Tatula Elite Casting Rod 7'3" Med Hvy Ehrler and pairing it with a Tatula SV 7.3:1. Can't wait to get them.
