Loomis crankbait rods for Traps and Spooks
Loomis crankbait rods for Traps and Spooks
I am wanting a rod to throw 1/2 oz traps and to double up as a spook rod. I am considering the CBR843 and CBR845, but leaning towards the 845. Any suggestion on the better of the two for these baits which I normally fish on MBR 783 and 843 rods? I would like to keep them open for buzzbaits and spinnerbaits, but I need a rod to fill that void.
Thanks for any feedback.

I love my GLX 855 for 1/2 - 3/4oz traps.

While I am not terribly familiar with the 845 I will say that the 843 is NOT the rod you are looking for to throw 1/2oz baits.

Re: Loomis crankbait rods for Traps and Spooks
The CBR 843 is entirely too soft. I could see using the 845 as long as you were using braid for the spooks, spinner baits, and buzz baits. However, the 3 power MBR GLX rods would be my choice for your listed applications. I could see using the new MBR 842 GLX for the traps, and if you were using 1/2 oz or under spook or walking baits, and 1/4 to 3/8 oz (max) spinner baits. Other than that, I'd opt for the 843 or 783. I fished a tourney this weekend and ended up getting on fish with a 1.5 sized square bill, the new MBR 843 GLX is the rod I was using. I had thrown some 1/2 oz spinner baits, a chatter bait, a full sized vixen, and a swim jig on the rod already when I figured out the square bill bite. It's an extremely versatile rod as is the little brother MBR 783 GLX, and the 842 is an awesome compliment. Really, you need the MBR 842, 843, and 844 for good measure and you'll be all set I'm really enjoying these new GLX rods, good work LoomisPINEKNOT wrote:I am wanting a rod to throw 1/2 oz traps and to double up as a spook rod. The GLX 855 CBR is my favorite 1/2 to 3/4 oz trap rod. Since you already have a MBR 783 and 843, give the GLX 855 CBR a try.
You could always get another MBR 783 or 843 to keep a spook tied on. Right now I am having fun fishing spooks etc on my Megabass X4 oneten Stick.

Thanks for the epiphany captain obvious

I have three 845CBR rods. One in E6X, fiber blend, and GLX. I use all of these for 1/2 oz size spooks. I do use braid. The GLX is an amazing rod from a lightness, sensitivity and the action of the rod when you hook up. The Fiber blend casts and works the spook so perfectly for me. If there was a way to combine the two, then you would have the perfect rod for me. As for fishing Traps, I very seldom fish those.
I don't care for the action of the MBR 843 GLX I have for using spooks. Great rod otherwise.
My opinion obviously, YMMV

How does the TWR 773C do with spooks? The 6'5" length should be perfect for walking baits.
Re: Loomis crankbait rods for Traps and Spooks
I fish walking baits on a 6'3MH or 6'6M length rod and which one I pick up depends on the weight of the topwater. I'd take a MBR 783 any day for this over any loomis crankbait rod I've fished regarless of weight.
For the trap, I prefer a crankbait rod but I'm happy fishing it on a 783 or 843 MBR loomis.
I have a loomis crankbait rod I love and have had for years to mention to you. It is the 814 smallmouth crankbait rod. I think it is basically shorter version of the 845. I wanted something of similar power to the 845 but with a length I could throw to targets and this rod has fit my needs for many years. No one talks about any of the loomis crankbait rods much any more no less the forgotten 814.
