BASS lifts 8' for rule

Post by JWR075 » Mon Sep 26, 2016 7:50 am

Thoughts? New rule will allow 10' rods. It will be interesting to see who jumps on this first (St. Croix said they were happy to see the rule change).

Hopefully blank designers do something interesting with the tapers other than taking their 8' blanks and making them 9' and 10' then telling me how far I'll be able to cast...anyone looking to get their cranks deeeeeep long lines anyway...1 to 2 extra feet on a rod won't change that.

Flipping blanks will directly benefit from the extra length if they keep the wt and balance in check.

I still hope to see some outside the box thinking. I don't have any ideas off hand what that could be though...probably why I'm sitting here hoping someone else does something cool

Hmmm...now real tests can be done in casting distance. I'd use a 10' rod if it ids truly beneficial and I can transport it. I see a lot of removable handles coming. Above the reel seat is something I see as well.

I won't buy a rod over 7'6 so this rule has zero impact on me. Rods longer that 8 foot aren't going to fit all that easy into most boats rod lockers. Oh, and guys complaining about balance and tip heaviness, be prepared to let the complaining continue as I can't see how they are going to balance without using a rod balancer at the end of the rod or a very heavy reel.

Yup, be similar to how the Ultimas and X7's come apart. Maybe some telescopic rods as well. The means are there.

Hopefully we see some of the rods like in muskie fishing move over to bass fishing but with lighter tapers. I would love a MH 10 foot rod for crankbaits. I currently use a muskie MH telescoping rod for muskie sized cranks but really once you get near 1.5 oz or lower it starts to be over powered.

I also hope this means boats will start having larger rod boxes.

How long till we start seeing long rods made for "dipping"? Wasnt one of the reasons this was illegal was the use of long rods and being able to drop jigs into brush like crappie guys do?
