I know a few around here have this rod and was wondering if it is as versatile as its weight range suggests. Looking to maybe pick one up before they go off sale, and a dedicated crig rod doesn't sound appealing...but a 7'3" mh/f rod does if you now what I mean. Chatterbaits?

It's very stiff tipped. Way too much for chatterbaits. The 893, 853, and 843 would all work though. It's called a 3 power, but it really a 4...maybe more

Carolina rig, jigs, pitchin', and I love throwing frogs on it.

I really like this rod, I use it for bottom contact, spinner baits, paddle tails, etc... Probably one of the most versatile NRXs, in the Loomis lineup.

I use my slightly stouter 894 for chatterbaits around heavy cover but certainly not my first choice in open water. The 843 would be that choice. Plastics would be my main purpose for the 873. Another comment is you don't need an ultra sensitive rod for a chatterbait just one with soft tip and big backbone IMO.

It's just fine for larger vibrating jigs, especially around cover. I've thrown 1/2 oz baits on the NRX 873 CRR on many occasions and haven't had any issues whatsoever. It's a fairly versatile rod in general, but as others have mentioned, it's best suited with a jig/plastic fishing on the bottom. I'm not a carolina rig fan, but it does handle them nicely too. I would consider it a "heavy" fast rather than a medium heavy fast however.

I prefer to use spinnerbaits on my 873 and leave the chatter baits to my 893 or 843. It felt slightly overpowered when I tried running chatterbaits on it.

Mine was my dedicated jig rod, until I got my 894. The 873 is a great rod but I would not throw blade baits with it. I use my Nrx 843 for that.

Along the same lines as original question, what is the 873 best used for? Top 3-5 methods/styles? And any difference between the blue and green models besides color?

Mine should be in route and paired with a Calais 200dc.

Makes an awesome jig stick, whether deeper 1/2 - 3/4 football jigs or pitching up shallow. I really liked it for casting Texas Rigged brush hogs with a 3/8 weight fished in deeper water. I'll pitch plastics around shallow docks and the 7'3" length works great. Personally I really like using it for frog fishing. Im not a huge fan of fishing frogs on really stiff broomsticks and the 873 has a decent mix of tip and power. Have not had any problems yet.

Great rod! I love it for fishing FB jigs and big worms on deep ledges. Also great for c rigs. I throw 15# InvizX on it and can feel everything! Hope you enjoy it. As far as color, I haven't noticed any difference but personal opinion I like the blue.

I'm in Oklahoma...just point me to the big worm ledge your talking about to try out
