Dobyns light jig, finesse plastics rod

Post by big tom » Thu Jan 21, 2016 4:26 am

I am a Dobyns rod fan and fish the Great Lakes region. I am looking for opinions for a dedicated rod for 1/4-3/8 jig/trailer, shakey finesse worms, and tubes. I am looking closely at the new HP 743C...appreciate other opinions :D

That's probably the right choice. Would also throw the 742 out there as a great option.

I just bought a DX742c HP for the same purposes. Perfect rod. Fishes closer to a 2.5 power than the older 742.

I have the DX 743HP (casting). Dobyns increased the power in the upper third of the blank on this series so with that said, the 742 would be the better choice in that weight rage and bait selection.

I agree. The DX743C HP is more powerful than the previous DX743C. I'm going to be getting a DX742C HP. :D

That being said...sounds like an HP 742 & HP 743 would cover nearly 75% of my contact lure needs and more  My 733C,734C and 735C pretty much cover the rest... That is very cool! =D>

This is one of my favorite rod trios. They just work together!

If it were being used more for the 3/8 jig + trailer, I think the 743c hp is preferable... if its being used
more for the tubes and shakey heads, then I'd go 742c hp. The 742c is perfect for finesse 1/4 + trailer jigs, but 3/8
is about where I would pick up the 743.

I am hearing that the new HP 742 is a 1/2 power level stiffer than the DX model...if that is true...then an HP 732.5 power
should work well with the 3/8s jig/trailer... I had a DX 742 a few years back and it was a tad soft on the hookset. I'd love to get an HP742C, HP743C and HP744C...but ahhh the budget is not there right now
Otherwise I work Senkos, wacky, tubes etc with my 733C and go with the HP743C...

So here's my perspective, for what its worth...
I have the champion 733c, and the dx742c hp doesn't
fish that much differently from it. The 742 hp is a more
sensitive rod, and has a faster action, but the 733c
has just a pinch more power to it. I end up using the 733c
for moving baits, and the 742 hp for basically all the uses
you mentioned, except the 3/8 jig +trailer where I would
fish it on the 743 hp.

The 742 hp can certainly handle the 3/8 jig, but i think that
weight is really in the 743 hp's wheelhouse. But I will say, i think the
743 hp is too much rod for shaky heads and tubes, so if you are looking
for one bottom contact rod to do everything you listed, perhaps the 742 hp
is the better all around option.

Love how you couldn't stick to just the scope of your original need, and had to
get the 704cb to boot. If its any comfort at all, the 704cb is one of my favorite
dobyns... vision 110s, staysee 90s, KVD 1.5, gunfish 95, I always have at least one
of these rods with me.
