NRX Help.

Post by rockchalk06 » Fri Aug 07, 2015 7:52 am

Need a little help.

I just got my NRX873c CCR today. I am super stoked. Now I want another. I know its rated up to 3/4 oz, but for me the sweet spot feels good at 3/8 oz with trailer.

A little info, I prefer a much heavier powered rod for pitching Jigs. My DX745 feels a tad under powered to me. GLX BCR855 feels under powered too. Now my GLX 894c FPR feels like it has plenty of power for what I need, but its a bit on the heavy side for me. I will continue to use it for 3/4 and up jigs, but my preferred jig is a 1/2 oz with medium sized trailer.

Like I said the 855 and DX745 feel under powered. I know so far that the different models of Loomis rods power ratings are different. A 4 power FPR runs 5 1/2-6 power in a JWR. That being said, what would probably be the better NRX fit without being a broom stick like the 894 FPR is? The 894JWR or 895JWR.

I don't think I have a dealer locally that stocks the NRX to test out.
Thanks in advance

Take a look at the NRX MBR series.

I like the 894jwr a great deal for 1/2 to 1oz jigs. I also have fished a 5 inch senko on it for a full week over grass and it was great. My understanding from many posts is the 895 gets tip heavy. So the 894 would be my recommended rod but I am a little concerned to fully recommend this to you as many guys feel the 873 is a great jig rod up to 3/4oz.

Don't know if this data point will help but let me provide you this. The NRX894 is slightly stouter then the older GLX 844. It seems to have a little more backbone and it deflects a little less with a 1.5oz weight on it. Recently I fished a 1oz head and a 6 inch paddle tail one of my 894's for multiple days. Felt great to me; would not have wanted any stouter rod.

the only thing I would not do with a 894 is punch matts or throw big swim baits. But for anything 3/8 to 1.25oz works for me great.

Talking with a buddy who has tried a few I'd lean 894c. I grabbed an 854c for my 1/2oz jig work since like you said, my 3 powered NRX had a 3/8 sweet spot. I was told the 894 has more power than the 854 and the 854 is a wicked 1/2oz jig rod. I thought about the 895 as well but was told it was a broom stick. I think my next NRX's will be the 843c and the 894c.

I looked at the measurements of deflection in the TT site. The 873 measured a 1.55, the old MBR844 like a 1.48 or something and as I said the 894JWR is a bit stouter then the 844.

Guys in this forum will talk about the 873 being a powerhouse while others talk about using it for spinnerbaits. Based on the TT measured results sure looks like a stout MH rod to me. I tend to like my rods on the stout side so I might like the 873 for finesse jigs, worms and chatterbaits.

Thats where I want to stay away from is the tip heaviness. I've been reading the same with the 895.

The 894 might be the ticket then.

Why is that? You'll have to forgive me, I'm kinda new on Loomis rods and have no experience on the MBR.

I was in the same boat as you. I wanted something more powerful than the 746 in the NRX line up. I too fish a 1/2oz jig in wood/brush/laydowns/bushes ALOT. NRX 894 is perfect. Just an amazing rod. I got a really good deal on one and put a full cork grip + balanced it in the blank. I use a tdz 103ml type r+ /w 7:1 gears on mine. Balances right under the reel seat. Best rod I've ever used. 894 is the right rod for you. It is deceivingly powerful for it's lightweight. I've never been under-gunned pulling fish out of cover.

I am the same. I really like the stiffness of that 894FPR too.

Thank you very much. I really like the Zillion's feel power etc. I have two, but the weight has me liking the MG7 better. I know the Zillion will be a better power reel, but I had never heard of the 103. 5.9 ounces would rock in a Zillion.

Do you have a picture of what you did to the rod? I prefer full cork and am curious to see what the mod looked like.

Thanks

I've been looking for a good 6'8" 1/2 jig rod to work from the bank around trees with. I may look at the 804JWR as well. Thank you

I love my 854c for the 1/2oz jigs and it double as a nice topwater stick for frogs and bigger pencil baits. It's been doing duty lately with a 1/2oz Dirt jigs Pitching Jig or a Showerblows Shorty.

The 6'8 to 6'10 length rods have been my staple rod for many years. The 894's are new additions I got in large part to fish florida with. I had both down on the Ohio river Sunday pitching plastics and jigs in heavy timber (above me, below me, beside me). When I hooked a fish the length of the 894 was great but in terms of being able to maneuver the rod the 6'8's rule. I own the 803's in NRX and GLX BCR. I'm normally throwing a 1/4oz weight and t-rig so they work great. The 804 would be better for the 1/2. I've never fished one though so don't have any data on it. I have an old Biffle 6'10 jig rod that I use for heavy jigs in close.

Forget my suggestion, I thought the NRX MBR came in a 4 power. The basic difference is in the taper.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their input. Tackle Trap had a sale and picked up an NRX894 JWR for 4 bones new. You guys were spot on. Its perfect for my 1/2oz pitching. Mounted my IP79 and will get some action tomorrow. I made a couple hundred pitches in the yard and it feels great. Sensitivity doesn't blow my GLX or DX away, but you can defiantly tell a difference though.
