What do you use to clean the rod cork? How often do you apply U40?

The link below is to an earlier thread that has some good information about cork handle maintenance:

Man, I think magic eraser is too harsh. I tried it once I didn't really like the results.
Dawn and a light scrubber sound like the ticket

Another vote for the Magic Eraser here. I soak it and use lightly as to not pull all the filler out.

This will be my first year with U-40. I was basically told put on one moderate coat and then reapply in a year.

I agree the coarse side is too abrasive, but not the sponge side. It's just a sponge. Warm water and Dawn, any surfactant should work, breaks down surface oil easily. Piece of cake.

Been using rod wrap about 15 years now, but before that it was a soft toothbrush. I went to rod wrap because I'm crazy ocd/add and no matter how careful I was I lost filler. I'm that guy who puts plastic mats over his carpet mats so they stay looking brand new, so I may be extreme.

On a side note; if I'm selling a rod, I'll tape off the butt cap and reel seat with masking tape and hit it with 1500 grit. It doesn't take any off really, but it smears fresh cork dust around and it looks new. Just pack it in the rod tube without touching the handle. My blanks and reels are cleaned with meguiars instant detailer and once a season get Klasse all-in-one.

Mr  generic clean :big grin: as I have been known to be a cheapskate on most things other than fishing equipment.
