Re: Spybait rod
Don't have too much time with spybaiting, but find my 7'6" ml xf avid spinning rod does a great job casting them and keeping fish pinned as well.

Re: Spybait rod
Since the Duo G-fix weighs 3/8oz, I can cast it with any med. action baitcasting cranking rod. I use a 7' rod.
I use a med.lite 7' cranking rod for the Spinbait 80, the same setup I use for small jerkbaits, because the lure is slightly lighter than the G-fix version.

Re: Spybait rod
Old thread, I know, but reading through it it seems like the consensus is a 7'ish ML fast rod. Now, there are a couple of options mostly within my intended budget range *but*... What about a custom rod...? 7' - 7' 3", 1/8-1/2 oz, light weight guide train (simple spiral wrapped for fun). Which blanks should I look at? Taper, length, weight would be my top 3 priorities. I'd like to keep the cost of the black in the $50 range. And go!
Re: Spybait rod
I am currently using the MB orochi xx dropshot rod, the non stinger tip version. Works amazing for spybaits.
I use duo realis spinbait 80 and 90 and just added a luckycraft screw pointer 80 to the mix

For what one of those costs, especially with the exchange rate, I'd much rather go with a custom build. I appreciate the input though.jpmoney wrote:I am currently using the MB orochi xx dropshot rod, the non stinger tip version. Works amazing for spybaits.

Re: Spybait rod
the regular spybait cast like a rocket on spinning or casting. dont see a purpose at all for the gfix. the regular one sinks more than fast enough already

Re: Spybait rod
It is a little strange that they made it fractionally heavier for casting gear. Maybe they're working under the assumption that not everyone has a rod and reel that can handle a lure lighter than 3/8. Strange for sure though.
Re: Spybait rod
I throw it on a spinning rod Mod. Fast i'm not a huge fan of the heavier spy baits, so I usually don't throw them.
Re: Spybait rod
I decided to grab some Duo spybaits and only throw them on bait cast gear. I bought the 90 size and they were a tad heavy for my ML rods. I had to go up to a MH rod. Going to grab the 80s soon.

Re: Spybait rod
I'll be throwing the 80's primarily. I have a single 90 but I'll be able to throw that on a number our my setups.sorrychow wrote:I decided to grab some Duo spybaits and only throw them on bait cast gear. Re: Spybait rod
I promised myself that if I was ever thinking of spending that much on a rod, I would get a custom rod built for the same price. If I were to find a great deal on one, that would be a different story though... That gives me a good idea of the kind of rod you prefer, that'll help me narrow my blank search. Thanks!bmlum wrote:I like using the dobyns dx741/702 for my spybaits
