nrx 893 vs nrx 853

Post by fishing fanatic » Wed Dec 24, 2014 4:55 pm

Hey guys I'm going to buy a nrx here in the next few days and I Dont no which one to get. I'm deciding bettwen the 853 and the 893 I am a shore fisherman but I'm looking for sensitivity over casting distance. So basicly if there's a difference in bottom contact sensitivity like bumping over rocks let me no thanks and merry Christmas

They are very close. I have some of each and am constantly cycling them through, based on the bait I've got tied on them. I don't really find either more sensitive than the other. But I like the extra tip on the 893 for throwing slightly lighter baits. If I were faced with this decision today, I'd get another 893. I just favor it slightly. But both are great rods.

The only place I liked the 853 over the 893 is playing in that 1/4 oz range..give or take a hair. I think you feel slightly more connected in that light range with the 853..I sold my 853 and got a second 893..it's a more versatile rod, IMO, and has more benefits than the 853. The length for casting distance and the blank handles the high end of the lure weight range better, I believe, even though they are rated the same...and the 893 does Not lack for sensitivity, obviously. Think of the 853 as a half power lighter and the lighter the bait, the more sensitive the lighter rod is going to feel...but I think that once you get to 3/8, the 893 is the better rod, IMO.

I agree with the 893, in fact, I drop down to the 852 when fishing below 3/8 oz. All the NRX rods are extremely sensitive.

I must fish quite a bit different then most guys. Rarely do I leverage a 3/8oz weight. Seems with T-Rigs I am almost always using a 3/16oz tungsten and when I shaky head fish I am typically using a 1/8oz weight. I do tend to throw both with 12 to 14lb FC line depending on cover I am fishing. I always use 803 rods for both. I have tried 852's and could not get enough hook set. Lost a few very nice fish. I have found no downside to using 803's. One of the things I like about the NRX series is the ability to protect line yet have a very nice backbone on the rod. I guess I like to match line to rod more then worry about what weight lure I am tossing. I move up to 4 series rods when I go to 17 or 20#FC even if I am just throwing a speed worm with a 1/8oz weight or lighter. If I am using heavy line I am doing so because of the cover I am fishing.

I own both as well and for me the rods are very similar.I would determine which one on the desired application. If I was primarily bombing long casts and had the room then I would go the 893. If I was primarily pitching or shorter was better in general then I would opt for the 853. I think the 893 is more versatile but I prefer pitching with the 853 in most cases.
I do know where there is an extra 853 collecting dust if that is what you decide.

Which Shimano 101mg are you planning on using? A Core or Metanium? I just picked up a NRX 893 and was trying to decide on which reel to use with it as well.

Nice! Put a set of Chronarch D7 gears in it and it'll be even better.

Not to highjack the thread but what are your opinions on the 803 vs these other two? Im looking to get a 3 powered NRX and have been liking using shorter rods lately. it will be more or a close quarters dock skipping rod so I want something compact but was wondering how they compared to each other. the 853 seems to be the black sheep of the family it seems?

I believe that's short for radical
