Dobyns Swimbait 807?
I have a question for you guys about the dobyns champion swimbait. I need a rod for everything from river2sea s-wavers and huddlestons all the way up to the 10 ounce osprey talon hvy 12 in. I would like to try a champion as I've heard great things about them. Would the 807 be the right rod for these applications?
Re: Dobyns Swimbait 807?
The 807 is to heavy for the S-wavers. I use the 806 for that type of bait. The 807 is great for 8" Hudds and above. I use the 795 for big topwater and 6" Hudds. "That's what works for me". I don't think one rod will work for everything correctly.
Re: Dobyns Swimbait 807?
JLP is right. In my opinion there is no one rod that will throw baits like the S-Waver and also throw 10oz baits.
Because of that I have the 795 ML and the 807. Pretty much have all the bases covered with that except for the huge stuff...

You probably don't like hearing it (I remember I didn't when I first started with the bigger baits) but the two posters above me are exactly right, one rod won't do all of that. I rock with the 795ML and the 867.....perfect combo IMO.
The 795 is extremely versatile in that I actually do throw up to an 8" Hudd on it from time to time but it's wheelhouse is in that sub-4 oz. category, again, IMO. The 867 is the cat's a** as far as the 8" Hudd goes too, the casting distance gains alone with that rod are note worthy. Plus the 867 is good for those ballsier baits on the other end of the spectrum.
So get a 795 or 806 first because you will be able to do more with either of those rods and then think about something for your heavier baits down the road.

Re: Dobyns Swimbait 807?
Hey guys,
I didn't want to start another thread so I figured I would just add/comment to this thread since its right up my alley...
I am in the camp where I cannot make up my decision as to whether I should get the 807 or 867...?????
I will be throwing mainly:
Gan Craft Jointed Claw
9” _ 4.00 oz.
Triple Trout
10” _ 4.50 oz.
SPRO BBZ-1 Slow Sink
8” _ 4.80 oz.
Huddleston Deluxe 8” Trout
ROF 5 _ 4.20 oz.
ROF 12 _ 4.80 oz.
Deps 250 SS
9”_ 6.50 oz.
The thing is...I am short. 5'5" and 8' rods are as long as I can handle physically for my stature. I also have a small car with minimal space and 8' rods are about the longest I can handle right now.
I hear great things about the 867 for a lot of the baits I listed...I am just hesitant that the extra 6" might be too much for me and cause me a lot of fatigue, headache and ultimately just flat wear me out.
I even heard the LDC Production XH can also throw most of these baits and I would still be at 8'.
Can the 807 handle those baits I listed...??? Any short guys like me using the 867 with success...??? Maybe the LDC XH is the way to go...???
HELP...?!?!?! I really don't want to get the extra 6" if an 8' can still do it. Thanks.
PEACE,
OG_ZILLION

I'm 5'4" and I have the same problem. Thats why I use the 807
I also throw all of those baits and the 807 handles them great.

@ OG, I can't comment about your specific situation, I can only comment on wonderful the 867 is. Here is a thread from Swimbait Nation where some seriously respected sticks talk about the 867.

Looks like Matt Allen pushes the 867 on the lower end and seems happy with it for some smaller baits.

The Dobyns 806 will fish all those baits you listed. "Not the Deps 250".................Yes, even that bait. I've fished that bait on it plenty, have stuck fish with it; it casts it fine. I do PREFER a heavier rod for that bait, but the 806 fishes it decent. I love the 806 for all the other baits you mentioned. Perfect Hudd rod, 10" TT rod; and will fish some 6" baits okay as well. IMO the 806 is the most versatile SB rod out there.
