New member - Nrx 852

Post by HookSetDon » Fri Feb 07, 2014 1:24 am

Hello everyone,

I've been on the forum many times reading reviews and information to help guide myself in making purchases, Ive decided to join to share some of my own experiences.

I just ordered a nrx 852 from the hookuptackle, Initially I was going to purchase the dsr822 but after speaking to Ben he convinced me the 852s was the way to go if I wanted to fish 1/4 drop shot weights on 7 lb line. Apparently the 822 was more suited for ultra finesse using 3,4,5 lb line which I never do.

I'll be using this rod primarily for drop shotting - 1/4 weights , keitech swing impacts nose hooked. Our northern waters have a lot of rock and weed anywhere from shallow to 30' of water.

if anyone has experience with this rod please share your opinions- Thanks

I would call THUT and demand the DSR 822s. The rod is more than capable of handling 1/4oz weight with 7lb line, even 3/8's wouldn't be a issue. The 852 just way to fast for my liking but everyone is different. Hope you enjoy your new NRX.

Welcome to the Forum. I guess I shouldn't post this, since you already made your purchase, but I have the NRX 852S JWR and the NRX 822S DSR and I regularly use a 3/8 oz weight (and have gone up to 3/4 oz) with the 822S DSR and I would not classify it as an ultra finesse rod by any means. I am not a fan of the 852S for dropshot, because the tip is more stout than the 822S DSR. However, I find the 822S DSR to be extremely technique specific (e.g., drop shot only) while the 852S is very versatile. If you plan on using this rod for more than dropshot, then you will be happy.

Agree with above. For a primary drop shot rod, the 822DSR is a great stick, and even the 822SYR is good. Both have softer actions. The 852 is my go-to rod. I don't drop shot nearly at all, but fish a ton of jigs and drag tubes. The rod has a really fast action with some serious backbone. Not the best choice for the drop shot, but will handle it if it has to.

i have not had my 852 long just a month or so but have caught quite a few fish already and have found it to be a very versatile spinning rod. i mainly throw smaller jigs especially hair jigs on this rod. I have also found it to be a great swing impact rod like you have mentioned i have been using 3/16-1/4 oz jig heads with the small swimbaits and works very well. I have also thrown some shakey heads as well with success. Imho i think it is a little to fast for drop shot rigs, will it work yes but in my hands it is not ideal i would think the 822 would be better suited for the drop shotting.

Keep your "wild Card" handy. My NRX852s snapped early in it's second year. Nice rod though

I also have a nrx852c. I used it for 1/8oz tube jig + jig, and weightless 4" senko.
