Dedicated tube rig.

Post by tracker01 » Fri Jan 10, 2014 2:52 am

I want to put together a spinning rod and reel for 1/8 oz.- 2 3/4 in. tubes. Primarily fishing for smallmouth that range from small up to around 6 lb. This rod will have a tube tied on 24/7. Price range for both rod and reel, about $300.00 plus or minus.

Envy Black Spinning Rod 7'1" Med Lt $225 Pflueger Supreme MGX Spinning Reel $99 only $25 bucks over budget!!! Catch a sale somewhere and youll have change to spare.. Always loved my powells too..havent gotten to fondle the inferno yet..but getting plenty positive praise so far..you could also look at the 6'10 inferno L leaving $170 to shop around and find a first gen stradic ci4 or new stradic FJ..

Endless possibilities....
After reading the tatula review if i was buying i think this is what i would do
Daiwa Tatula Spinning Rod 6'11" Med Lt Lure rating 1/64-1/4oz
reel...again..Stradic ci4, Saros of Stradic FJ.. would lean more towards an ci4

i like my 6'8" mxf st croix avid. I use it mostly for flukes and tubes. As for a reel if you get an avid you could get an abu orra s, or pflueger president, or a shimano sahara and still have some money left for line. Out of those 3 the orra would be my choice (I've used all 3)

I'm really like everything Fenwick has put out the last few years, I've had my income drop so I keep my rod choices in the $100 to $200 range and the rod I got for fishing 3" and 3.5" tubes for river smallmouth was the Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth spinning rod, 6'9" medium power, extra fast action. The rod is super versatile and so I also use it for shaky heads and drop shots but light tubes and finesse jigs are killer because of the sensitivity and it feels awesome in hand, seriously I was shocked by the sensitivity of this rod. The new Aetos in a 7' medium power, fast action would be another you could use as a dedicated rod. These are my favorites and they will leave a little extra for a reel, I prefer the Elite Tech because the reel seat is just awesome for the way I hold the rod, when I extend my index finger to touch the blank it isn't on threads, my finger is in perfect position and that is why I prefer it but the Aetos is extremely nice too.

You can pick up a slightly used Dobyns DX742SF for around $240, and then pick up a Shimano Sahara 2500 for about $50-60.

Throw on some 15# braid and some 6# fluorocarbon leader and you will feel EVERYTHING.

I suggest the following:

Phenix Recon 2 763M 7'6" Medium power 1/8-1/2 lure weight, 6-12lb line rating - $189

Phenix M1 74M/78M Medium Power 1/8-3/4 6-12, $177/$178

Pair it with a Symetre 2500 or Saros 2500...
