What is your finesse casting rod?

Postby romans » Wed Jan 08, 2014 10:05 am

I am on a quest for a finesse casting rod that to me has the " IT " factor. I am looking for a 1-2 power fast action casting rod.I own and have owned more than a few but looking for "the one".I am hoping that it is out there and I just haven't got my hands on it yet.I figure if you guys tell me what you are using this will give me prospects I hadn't thought to look into.
Thanks in advance.

I have several.

Daiko Burroughs BRSC 64L.
GLoomis CR721 IMX.
Megabass F0-60X Elese
Dobyns DX702

and perhaps a bit unusual but,

Evergreen Steed. It's much better as an L with a Pixzilla than as a MH. With light line (4-6# Youzuri Soft), it's a gr8 light stick.

Custom Lami XMG50 LC862...the most "finesse capable" BC rod I have ever owned, granted I have never gone below a 2 power.

The other ones I have owned that were close, were an MBR782 IMX and a custom 2nd gen SCV 7'0" med spinning blank converted to BC.

How light are you trying to throw?

Megabass Pagani GRAPHITE F1-63Xp-Dti MEIGEKI
13Fishing Omen model OBCA610ML (Amazing rod for the money)

Both can throw sub 1/8 ounce if teamed with the right reel and line.

Both have what I consider the "IT" factor, although  at slightly different price points.

I have many finesse rods, but the two that really have the "IT" factor and will always be in my stable are the Loomis CR721 IMX and the Dobyns DX701C.

For me, the CR721 is the most versatile finesse rod I own. I throw weightless finesse plastics, small cranks, jigs, spinnerbaits and topwaters on this rod and have used it to bass fish and inshore fish for several years now. It is a rod I will never part with.

If I were limiting myself to finesse plastics, I give the nod to the Dobyns DX701C. It is the only Dobyns rod I own (previously had a 702 but got rid of it as I enjoyed the 701 way more) and there is just something that feels so right about it. Great caster, great balance, great taper, great sensitivity and I feel like I'm going to catch fish with it every time it is in my hand. I also caught the biggest Redfish I have ever caught on this rod. It is another rod that I will never part with.

I, like you, am always looking for the next greatest rod and who knows maybe I'll find another with the "IT" factor. Three others that I've owned for a shorter period of time than the above are also outstanding: Megabass Phase III Eiger NorthWall, Megabass X7 Shading X, and a custom that Edge Rods built for me on a NFC SSP767 HM blank cut down to 7'.

I enjoy reading what other people are using for finesse casting rods and hope others will chime in with their finesse rods that have "IT."

Great thread btw. =D>

For me it's an Evola 6'3"M. I use 5 and 6# flouro and it can cast light baits with no problem.

I'm using a recon 712 for finesse jigs, but my chronarch d7 stock spool isn't cutting it for pitching duties, I'm sure it would do worlds better with a true bfs reel.

I went back through my list of rods that I have owned...forgot about the near perfect match of the original Falcon Expert 6'9"L paired to a burgundy Scorpion 1000 back in the day! 8-)

My finesse fishing often takes me to waters with a lot of grass like some parts of the Potomac.

I have used a Dobyns DX701C, and found it to be much too light. it was like-new when I sold it. I never bothered to use it in grass situations.

I have also used the Phenix Recon 2 PHX-C713...it's rated as an ML, but it fishes like an L...Rod was too light. The performance below the rating is typical of most Phenix rods.

On the other hand of the power scale, I have used the Dobyns DX742 and DX743, and found them a little too stiff for finesse fishing, and they are not as sensitive as I like.

I am currently using an NRX 852, with a Liberto Pixy PX68L and 30-lb Sumurai braid. One of my most used lures is a Zoom Finesse Worm or similar worm rigged with a 1/8 oz Charlie Brewer Slider Head (the Spider version with the light wire hook). Sensititivity is a primary requirement, and secondly, i don't want to break off fish in the grass, hence the braid.
