Can't speak for the dobyns but recently received a 7'3"M black envy and so far I can't find anything to complain about. Balance is very good with a Core50 and should be slightly better with the 7'1", feels very light and lively in my hands. I was able to finally make a few cast from shore since my boat is put away for old man winter and came away extremely pleased with the sensitivity for a $200 after BF sales. I was crawling a 7/16oz biffle head w/3.5 biffle bug rod never seemed overwhelmed casting wise just a matter what kind of structure your fish, in my case mostly off shore humps and shoreline sandy gravel the medium should be ok. Deeper water 20ft+ might require their MH. As for me other applications would include blade baits like silver buddy/binsky and soft jerkbaits. Other possibilities are topwaters and traps. My opinion may vary as I prefer slightly softer more moderate rods for my style of fishing.

I use a 742dx for light Texas rigs and weightless stick worms and absolutely love it. It's a very versatile rod, light weight, well balanced and as with all DX rods very sensitive. Great tube rod too. It's likely my favorite casting rod for the Great Lakes.

I have a Envy 7'3" MH for pitching mid weight plastics and half ounce jigs. This rod is also great and keeps impressing me. Honestly at first I didn't like it as much as my DX rods. After fishing with it for a season I now love it and think it's on par with the DXs. It could be even more sensitive but I'm not prepared to make that statement...

Both highly recommended mid priced bottom contact rods that have proven their value and quality to me.

I've not fished the 7' M Envy but I'm thinking it would be better to compare the 7'3" M Envy with the 742.

I can't compare the two but I do have a DX742 paired with a PX68. I use it mostly for 4" Senkos, tubes, flukes, and light Texas rigs. It's a blast to fish with in open water to moderate cover situations. It balances well with a Pixy and is very good as far as sensativity is concerned.

Great choice. Yes, this is a slick shakey head rod. What reel are you pairing with it?

Those weights are good for the 742. I have even used an 1/8 oz weight plus a 4" bait.

I'm undecided on reels.I have a supertuned curado 50 done by Kevin at pro reel but I have a lews tournament pro that I think throws those weights better.I have a kistler klx 7mh now that I'm positive cost me $ in the last bfl I fished because the rod was to limber! I hope this dx742 is my last & final answer

I actually ordered both these rods.the 7'1m envy came first, awesome rod.in 2 days I've caught a 6.3 & a 5.6 using 3/16 shakyhead paired with a patriarch xt & 8lb floro.the dx742c is going to have to be some SPECIAL rod to bump the envy off shakyhead duty

That is great to hear. Maybe I'll try one too. Let us know how the 742 compares for you.
