Stick length

Post by goldrod » Sat Jun 15, 2013 11:11 pm

Do you feel a 7' c/b rod is still relevant in today market of 7'10" and plus sticks?
What is the length of your longest c/b rod and what's the deepest you fish c/b?
I've been looking at a longer c/b rod and powell/twh rod has some good reviews but
I think the max is 3/4oz, to me what's the point when most deep diving c/b are at least
1oz.

I think 7' is relevant in the shallow- to mid-CB market, but not very effective in the deep CB market...although some people may be limited by storage options (short rod lockers)...there are 7-footers rated over an ounce (Loomis CBR 847) but a shorter rod length still cuts down on casting distance. Good call on the "real" weight of some deep CBs, as I've seen some listed at 3/4 oz that weigh as much as 1 1/8oz.

For many years a deep diving c/b was thrown on a 7 footer
I think that a good reel has just as much to do with casting distance as the rod length.

OK. It can obviously be done..but give. The choice I would, and do, choose a longer rod, to maximize my effort. 5'6" worm rods with pistol grips were popular and used for years too..but there are better tools for the job now...but to each their own.

I love my steez flexlite 7' rod for open water. Squarebill cranks, topwaters, and sometimes jerkbaits. I just bought a dobyns 764 for my deper cranks, hoping thats the ticket.

If they were not relevant they would not be so readily available. I still appreciate a shorter rod, even for cranks.

I use a 7'1", a 7'3" and a 7'11" for cranks. I still like a rod around 7' for square bills and spinnerbaits (GLX 855 CBR is getting the nod right now).

You know...I started off using shorter rods like 6'8" and 7', and then people kept telling me I needed to go with longer rods; so I started buying 7'3", 7'6", 8'ers...but I find myself wanting to go back down to 7' rods, and I'm even considering buying 6'6" rods now.

I think for punching, flipping, and Carolina rigging you need a longer rod in the 7'9" to 8' range, but for spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, crankbaits, jigs, Texas rigs...I'm starting to think that shorter rods just make life easier. I find it easier to pitch more accurately with a shorter rod...granted I can do it perfectly fine with a longer rod, but with a shorter rod it's just a little easier, which really adds up at the end of the day.

I've recently been buying shorter rods, but I haven't started using them yet...we'll see what happens.

For the record, my opinions were based on deep crankbaits, as mentioned by the OP. I use 7-footers for shallow, mid, squarebills, etc.

I like a 7 ft crankbait rod for everything except deep divers. I remember not too long ago when 7 ft was considered a long specialty rod.

I use ~ 7'0" for poppers, jerkbaits and small-med cranks...easier to wield in tight spots as well.

Add me to the shorty list also.

Trying to bring a 7'11 CB rod in your car is a pain. Two of mine favorite rods are 802, and 803 GLX.
