Anyone using a Recon 713ML?

Post by sn95 » Sun Aug 19, 2012 4:14 pm

Is anyone using a Recon 713, if so what are you using it for? I'm looking for a lighter action rod that would be decent at a little bit of everything. I really like my Recon 764, so I figured I'd look at Phenix Recon series again. Also what reel do you have pair up with it? Thanks for any help.

I use my 713 for darters, light jigs (finesse and shakey), the occassional spoon (I'm lucky to live near a lake with white bass) and doodling (texas rig with brass and glass). It's a pretty versatile light action rod for me. I probably could use it for other things, but this is what I use it for now. Depending on my mood, I'll either have a Pixy or a Curado 50 on it. It balances out well with either reel.

I have a custom built on that blank with a Curado 51E on it. I got it for shaky heads and it works if I fish them Texposed, but I wish it had a bit more power. I'd call it more of a light action rod versus a ML which it's labeled. It is a great little open hook jig rod. I caught a bunch of walleye, saugeye and sandies on it this spring with a 3" grub 1/8oz jighead.

Thanks guys, just the info I was looking for. The Curado/Chronarch 51E is one of the reels I was looking at picking up, that or maybe a Sol/Alphas if I can find one in my budget. I'm OK with it being on the lighter side of ML. It is probably going to be used for smaller bass and I am hoping some river smallies if I ever actually get around to trying to make my way to them.

I use mine for ripping, drop shotting, dart heading... It's great! I have it paired with a Shimano Aldebaran. Really light combo!

I use mine for Rippin/DS/Shakey Head. I think it works very well for either of those three finesse techniques. It pairs well with any of the above mentioned reels. I also would venture to add curado E7 to that list as well, but its a big reel for the finesse techniques. Most of the recons Balance pretty well with all reels so its really personal preference.

RIppin' is throwing a jerkbait, i believe its a more a full motion swing then jerking the rod with your wrist. Its a little slower retrieve imo dont quote me on that though.
