Pitching Rod

Post by hillestadj » Mon May 07, 2012 4:28 pm

Looking for advice on a new pitching rod. What have you guys found to be the best thing going in the $100-$150 range? Obviously lowever price is also okay, but willing to pay more if the extra cost is warrented.

Im not sure if $250 bucks is out of your range or not but I bought a Dobyns Champion 735c for pitching and it is a great stick. I would recommend looking into this if you are willing to spend that much. All Dobyns rods have a warranty on them. Check them out www.dobynsrods.com

The Powell 704c is a nice pitching rod and its in your price range. I used it until I upgraded to a dx744.

I'll look into the suggestions thus far. But to be honest I have a hard time spending over $150 on a rod, not that they aren't worth it, but for my skill set its hard to justify.

Depends on what your pitching if your pitching Senkos and weightless baits take a look at the Recon 744 or 804 both great rods for that.

On the price range, I suggest that you wait until the on-line stores have their big holiday sales where most everything is 15 or 20 % discounted. Thus, a Phenix Recon rod normally at about $170 will go for $134 shipped.

Memorial Day is coming up, and some or all of the big online stores may have big discount sales.

Good luck.

Waiting for a sale may be the thing to do if I cant find something suitable in the mean time.

The 744 appeals to me but looking at the weight rating it's rated for 3/8-1 1/4 oz lures. How would this rod handle a 1/8oz weight and a zoom trick worm or brush hog? Would the 714 be better because of the lower weight rating?

how heavy are trick worms and/or brush hogs? aren't they at least 1/4 oz? i do not have a 744 or a 714 but it sounds like the rod should handle what you are talking about just fine.

If you can't justify spending the money on a new high end rod, try looking for used rods on the "for sale" forum. I have bought several used high end rods, and on average paid .50 on the $1. If you are patient, you can usually find exactly what you want, and at the same time get a really good deal. High end rods are a sickness, once you use one, you can't go back to the less expensive (less sensitive) rods. They really do make a difference.

Excellent point. I have bought many Used "like new" rods and reels off the "for sale/trade/wanted" section here on TT, and I never had a bad deal.

Suggestion...just scanning the top 10-15 for sale items in the "for sale" section, I don't see any rods matching your needs. You could post a "wanted" thread indicating the type of rod you're looking for, price range, etc. I have done that and was surprised at the results.

Good luck
