Rod for hard jerkbaits?
A friend is looking for a hard jerkbait rod to throw the usual suspects like 78's, 100's, 110's and 112's. I was thinking of something like a Loomis CBR 783. I have a custom jerkbait rod that I use, so I don't have any real good advice for him. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
Re: Rod for hard jerkbaits?
You can either use a crankbait rod or a medium powered fast action rod. I prefer to use a crankbait rod.
If your friend is a GLoomis fan, then a 3 or 4 power cranking stick will work well. I don't feel the need to use the shorter sticks but a lot of guys do prefer them. I've used the CBR845 with good success in the past.
GLoomis also introduced a jerkbait series that came out a couple (or few?) years ago which has gotten some good reviews on this forum.
These days, I use a Dobyns 705CB most of the time. My normal rotation of baits includes the Staysee 90, Pointer 100 & Slender Pointer 112.

Re: Rod for hard jerkbaits?
Powell Max 702C has been handling jerkbaits great this year for me. In fact, it's the best jerkbait rod I've ever had for 78SP, 78DD, slender 112, etc. I used to throw my jerkbaits on a 7' MH Fast IMX and that rod seemed to be just fine, but I really like the soft action of the Powell rods.

Re: Rod for hard jerkbaits?
I've always used medium powered fast action rods in 6'3" to 6'6". I found it very hard to use my style of fishing a jerkbait using a long rod or cranking rods but I have found a wonderful rod for the 3/8oz to 7/8oz big jerkbaits, my Fewnwick smallmouth 6'10" MH-MF. It has the tip of a fast action rod so I can really move the bait but as soon as you lay the wood to a fish, the rod flexes really nice to give you that fish fighting action, sort of the best of both worlds, I just have to get use to the longer rod.

no, no, no!Huskybass101 wrote: I was thinking of something like a Loomis CBR 783.
That 783 "might" be enough rod for the Pointer 78's, but never any bigger than that!
If Loomis, go with the "5" power in their crankbait rod models.
I throw Pointer 100's and 112MR's ALOT up on lake Erie & use a Dobyns 705CB graphite, & 764CB RM.
Re: Rod for hard jerkbaits?
On the Loomis side, I prefer the MBR 782 GLX or the CBR 785. The 3-power CBR are softer than I like, personally. The JBR 752 has a good action, if you are looking for a 6'3" rod.
Re: Rod for hard jerkbaits?
I'm using a DX702 for most of my jerkbaits at the moment. The tip is a little lighter than I would like but it's a blast to fish. I think a DX742 would be perfect.
Re: Rod for hard jerkbaits?
I've used the Champion 702C for them before. Like the DX742, the 702 is slightly more powerful than the DX702. The 702C also has a slightly more forgiving action than the DX742.cst wrote:I'm using a DX702 for most of my jerkbaits at the moment. While it was nice to fish the jerkbaits with the fast action rod, I didn't have many other techniques for it in my normal rotation - I prefer to fish finesse techniques with a spinning rod. That is why I fish these lures with a cranking stick.

Re: Rod for hard jerkbaits?
I have been experimenting with the G Loomis CBR 855 GLX for jerkbaits and so far it seems promising. Handles the Pointer 100 SP's well along with the Megabass Vision 110's. I was also able to cast the Pointer 78's with no problem. I like the moderate fast action it has, but it doesn't feel as soft as its CBR 845 counterpart. I didn't think I would like the 7'1" length, but it wasn't too bad and I was able to really cast a long way. This Spring will be the true test.

6'8" or 6'9" is the way to fly.

This or the Falcon HD series if you are looking to save some coin.Crackerjack wrote:Falcon user here Cara T7 6' 7 " soft tip with stout bottom or CaraT7 AOY 6' 8"

Re: Rod for hard jerkbaits?
Honestly, 6.6 to 6.9ft, med power, fast action.
Its the rod you likely already have. I challenge anyone to show me why any other rod is miles better.
CB rods are usually too long, or too soft. If you want to work hard with a long, soft rod to work the bait, be my guest.
Anything shorter is fine, but you will lose casting distance.
Anything much heavier, you risk pulling out hooks, or breaking the line you should be using, which is 8-12 pound flouro.
