topwater rod help
topwater rod help
Im a big fan of the heddon spook and im currently working it on a bcr 803 mossey back which I know is not the right rod for this bait. One day I just threw it on and I can walk the dog with ease but my hook up ratio suffers. I have a powell 704cb for rips, rattle traps and square bills but hate it for spooks. I was thinking Dobyns 705cb glass? I also have a 782 IMX? But I also would like to use this rod for 1/2 3/4 ounce fat free shads in mod grass. anyone have any ideas it would be great

Re: topwater rod help
I would reccomend the G.Loomis JBR 813C jerkbait rod, I prefer my JBR 753C because I like the shorter rod but the 813C is 6'9" so it may be too short for your own personal preference but its an awesome rod for spooks and sammies. I use a fast action rod for jerkbaits and topwaters because I have a hard time working the lures with cranking rods with slower actions and the jerkbait series really lets you walk the dog with ease yet it is forgiving enough that you don't rip the bait from the fish's mouth.

i am using a 6'5" custom jerkbait/topwater/spinnerbait rod. I like a shorter rod with a shorter handle for those types of baits. The blank is a 7'MH, fast action cut down to 6'5" so it has a mod/fast action but the tip is stiff enough to work the bait effectively.gundog wrote:Im a big fan of the heddon spook and im currently working it on a bcr 803 mossey back which I know is not the right rod for this bait. Re: topwater rod help
Which size Spook? I've used both the Spook Jr and Super Spook on a CBR845. The Super Spook overpowers the CBR845 a bit on the cast, but I really didn't have problems walking it. It's not the ideal rod which is why I started using a Dobyns 733C for the Super Spook and keep the Spook Jr on the CBR845.
Re: topwater rod help
I throw the super spook.
Re: topwater rod help
If it's the larger Super Spook then I would say either a Dobyns 733 or 734. I use the 734 for topwaters on the CA Delta and love it.

A Powell 734c Max or a 726cb Endurance are good choices for baits like the super spook and the Pencil Popper. These rods have the backbone to throw these baits since they are a little heavier, while still having enough forgivness in the tip so you dont pull the bait away from the fish.

734 for me too. If you want to stay with a cranking rod, the 705CB Glass does work well.godshippy wrote:If it's the larger Super Spook then I would say either a Dobyns 733 or 734. I use the 734 for topwaters on the CA Delta and love it.
IMO, a 4 power cranking rod just isn't enough stick for a super spook. You loose some of that crisp feel/ability to work the bait. I also usually upgrade the hook on the baits too. You tie into a Delta striper & those thin wire hooks get all bent up.
