DOBYNS or ? Crankbait Rod Help
DOBYNS or ? Crankbait Rod Help
Hi, I am new to the forum but have been reading for a while. I recently handled a Duckett Micro Magic 7' Medium action Crankin" rod. I liked the feel both power & action plus the weight & balance. However I am not exactly fond of the "cosmetics". I have always been a Loomis guy & own a CBR845, which is fine, but this felt great especially for 1/2oz Traps & other small to mid sized cranks. Bandit 100 & 200s, 1/4 - 5/8 oz rattle baits 1/2 oz Fat Free Shad.
Is there something in the vast Dobyns Crankbait collection or any other mfg. that might be similar to the Duckett but a bit more visually appealing ?
Thanks for your suggestions.

I would suggest the Dobyns 704cb which I really like and have been using for some time now or the Powertackle PGC173-CP-73 which I just started using and am impressed so far.
Re: DOBYNS or ? Crankbait Rod Help
I've not used the micro magic but have held my buddy's. Hard to really compare since I haven't even cast it.
For the baits you mention, I'd go with the 705CB. I would find it the best compromise. Let me explain. While the 705CB will cast 1/4oz baits, it absolutely rocks with 3/8 - 1/2 baits. The 704CB, as you might expect, casts the 1/4oz baits much better. I like to keep that rod @ 1/2oz & below for lure weights. Trying to rip 'traps or crank 1/2oz fat frees will push the rod IMO.
Again, I haven't use the micro magic, so I don't know how that rod fishes but, I've felt the same about other brands. Meaning that trying to fish those baits or range of baits is something I've always felt is a bit of a compromise.
Now, if you like a ' traditional glass' rod (I don't like the feel) I'd suggest the 705CBMF Glass. It will cast that range of baits better.

Re: DOBYNS or ? Crankbait Rod Help
Sorry for the thread jack but would anyone say that the Dobyns 705 would be the same or lighter in action to the Powell 706. Im using a Powell 706 for burning 3/8 and 1/2 oz traps but I was interested in trying a Dobyns just to see if it would handle the same. Thanks, G
