Opionons on Dobyns Savvy

Post by fshrfwl » Sun Mar 20, 2011 8:11 am

Would like to know what you think of the Dobyns Savvy series rods. Looking at a 692 spinning for wacky worms. Im sure the price difference to the Champion is worth it, but what i am really interested in, is if the Savvy is a good rod for $150? Thanks

I love my Dobyns Savvy series of rods. They balance amazing and have very good quality materials. The warrenty is very good too, great customer service as well.

+1.... I have a number of the Savvy rods (spinning 692,693 and casting 703, 704 and 735) and like them all. For the money, I think you would be hard pressed to find something better.

Hey Fly what reel do you have on your 692 and what do you mainly use it for? Thats actually the rod Im thinking of getting. Mostly for light stuff like wacky jig head and neko rigs.

I have a Daiwa Exceller on it in the 1500 size, it balances very nicely with that particular reel. I just picked it up a couple weeks ago and its winter here so it hasn't got a whole lot of use yet but I did get it out and catch some perch one day last week. It was plenty sensitive to feel them grab the tail end of my plastics. I got it as kind of a filler, between the really light stuff (ordered a DX701 that is due here today) and the 693 but I can see it becoming a go to for wacky rigs and the like as you stated. It very well may become a go to wading rod for river smallies. It has a soft enough tip and plenty of backbone to the point that I think that 692 is a very versatile rod and could handle anything from grubs to inline spinners to small cranks. I'm really impressed with it.

I only have the SS 702, but I am super pleased with it, easily the best rod I own at that price range!

I have a 704. It's definitely a step down from the Champion series but still a good rod.

I don't have the rod you mentioned but do have a 735 in casting, love it although I kind of wish the handle was a little longer.

I have a SS734 and really love the rod. I don't feel there is a huge sensitivity increase from the other good $100 budget rods but the action and power on the blanks fit my style so much better. I would describe it as very close to perfect. I don't think you will be disappointed.
