Absolute accurate casting

Post by Smalleyez » Mon Mar 14, 2011 5:45 pm

What casting rod you reach for when you need absolute casting accuracy? Pockets in between boulders, under limbs, or right tight to shore.

Talking short to medium ranges with surface plugs (Pop-R's, Chug Bugs, Spooks, etc)

I'm trying to put together a rig for pinpoint casting to all of the nooks and crannies on a wild stretch of river. On most occasions if your surface plug lands within a few inches of shore or your target you get bit. If you miss, you don't.

7' rods seem a bit unwieldy for this, but I'm open to new ideas.

Loomis CR721 or 722 depending on power requirements.

For this, I use a thirty-year-old 5 1/2-foot pistol grip Shimano rod with a moderate action.

St. Croix 6' LE - picked up here from Wisco - exactly what I was looking for. This is the brown blank
and it will receive my newly acquired Conquest 50S. 8-)

Loomis IMX CR663 - unfortunately no longer made - but can still get the Mossyback equivalent. 5' 6" - 6' is the best length for accurate casting in tight spots. Use them all the time for Barra, even in open water, as I find short sticks are much easier to twitch lures with.

For surface lures I seem to be able to place them wherever I want in tight with my Powell 684cb.

For me it's a first generation green blank 6'6"M legend elite. I had a 6'3" LTB sniper spinnerbait that was my first choice until it got eaten by a boat cleat!

Steez 6'3MH

Not only accurate but ideal action for topwaters and spinnerbaits. Perfect with a Sammy 100.

That's the pair that I have been fishing for four seasons now. I have found the 6' LE to be a great all around rod, and the Conquest 50S has been a wonderful mate for my rod.

X2 on the 5'6" pistol grip.
Bronzeye, I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only guy that still uses one of these. I use the Loomis BCR663. Great rod for this application.

I do my best work with a 6' rod.
slip bobbing is the laziest way to fish
