New crankbait rod
Re: New crankbait rod
The Dobyns 765 Glass handles DD22's very well. I throw mainly deep divers on mine and love it.

Re: New crankbait rod
Take a look at the Powell 753 Glass or the 804CB Endurance. Both rods will handle multiple types of baits including topwaters and small swimbaits,
Re: New crankbait rod
IMO, the 705 doesn't handle the really light stuff. It's okay, but I prefer the 704 CB for my light cranks like speed traps and poppers. I really tried to get a combo crankbait rod, but soon realized it wasn't going to happen. So I got both! Unless you like to throw lots of little poppers and such, the 765 should be what you're looking for. For me, the 705 is one mean cranking rod.
Re: New crankbait rod
Zodiac-I don't throw the deep divers much. 8 - 12 ft. is about it.

A page and a half and no mention of the Loomis CBRs? I've got a couple (and about to buy another) and I think they're fine crankbait rods. Maybe an 845?

I have three CBRs ...... a 781, an 843 and 2 845's. All good rods but I think a 7'6" or longer rod would be better.bigfish85 wrote:A page and a half and no mention of the Loomis CBRs? I've got a couple (and about to buy another) and I think they're fine crankbait rods. Maybe an 845?

Personally, I don't like the (short) rear handle on the rods.bigfish85 wrote:A page and a half and no mention of the Loomis CBRs? I've got a couple (and about to buy another) and I think they're fine crankbait rods. Maybe an 845?

Re: New crankbait rod
I grabbed 2 of the Dobyns 7'6" crankbait rods.
The 764CB RM & 765CB glass.
Haven't put them to use on the water yet, but I've been playing with them in the front yard. Gunna have fun finding a nitch for them this season.
The 764CB RM is definately a keeper! Gunna use it for mid-deeper cranks (8 ft-14 ft divers, really don't crank much deeper)
The 765CB glass, if liking glass, is an awsome rod! Looks & feels like a VERY versatle!
Also got a 705CB graphite.

Oh yeah, I can see the 765CB Glass throwing anything from big cranks and small swimbaits, to big topwaters and even 3/4-1oz spinnerbaits. I personally can't wait to get mine out on the water either!OhioChamp183 wrote: The 765CB glass, if liking glass, is an awsome rod! Looks & feels like a VERY versatle!

OR, on the lower spectrum........ shallow cranks & baits down to about 3/8oz oz. It has the tip action to do so!BB144 wrote:Oh yeah, I can see the 765CB Glass throwing anything from big cranks and small swimbaits, to big topwaters and even 3/4-1oz spinnerbaits. Re: New crankbait rod
Personally, this past year, I used a Powell 806CB and Powell 765CB/SBR.
The 765CB/SBR is a nice all purpose cranking stick. I really enjoyed fishing baits in the 3/8-1/2 oz range, including topwaters like Yellow Magic Poppers. This rod is long enough and flexes enough to cast stuff a long ways yet still has plenty of power. I caught a five lber on this rod last year and it handled the fish easily. Also, this rod is very light for it's length and balances right in front of the winding check with a Daiwa Fuego strapped on.

The 806CB is more of a specialty stick to me. It has a ton of power. I think it's a good choice with bigger baits or around weeds. But it's definitely tip heavy, especially without a substantial reel on it. I've been using a Luna 103 and it feels pretty good to me. I don't do deep cranking, but this rod would probably work well for large deep divers.

Re: New crankbait rod
how much did you want to spend?
Re: New crankbait rod
Daiwa 7'8 Longcast Cranking rod if you can find one. Not as much backbone as the 7'6CBRM but a great rod nonetheless.

Check out the Phenix rods (the X series). The X10 was a TT Editors Choice. They are a blend of glass tip and graphite backbone.
