Which Dobyns Champion for...?
Re: Which Dobyns Champion for...?
I use the 683 C it works really well for 3/8 oz spinnerbaits I wont go any higher then 1/2 oz.

You might try moving to a 7' rod to see if the extra length works for you.Bob Ellis wrote:I fish like an old man, hence the shorter versions.
In the end, if you're comfortable with a certain length, go for it.
How come DR rods don't have a 736 in their extreme line up i really like the heavy action with an extra fast tip

Maybe its MN thing Bob, but I like shorter rods too. Anything over 7' just doesn't feel as good to me. Although, I just ordered the Dobyns 733, but only because they don't offer the full grip on the 7' version.
All my pitchin, jig, and finesse rods are 6'6 to 6'8.

I actually like the 705 Glass for spinnerbaits. It has become my favorite spinnerbait rod.I also use a Loomis GL2 6'6" medium heavy for small spinnerbaits and roll casting under tree branches.
Re: Which Dobyns Champion for...?
I like my GL2s, good thing not many people do because I have found them for good prices.
It looks like the Powell and cheaper Dobyns rods are going to knock back sales of GL2s even more after reading this forum.

Re: Which Dobyns Champion for...?
I would definitely go with the 3 power rod. I recently purchased a 734 for jigs and was worried about the heavy power but ended up loving it. It's hard to describe but the action of the rod is close to perfect. It has plenty of backbone but the tip is 'just' soft enough.
As for the length, I have started converting to longer rods myself. I used to fish with all 6'-6'6 rods but in the past year or two tried out a couple 7' rods. The difference doesn't sound like a lot but it shows during usage (or maybe it's just in my head). In the end it's important to get something you're comfortable with, but don't be afraid to step up to a slightly longer rod...you may love it.

I'll be using a 683C for short distance cover spinnerbaiting, and a 733C for distance spinnerbaiting.
I mostly throw 3/8 & 1/2oz.

Re: Which Dobyns Champion for...?
I fish lakes that don't have much cover during the colder months, but then are weed choked during the warmer months. I could use the 733 during the former and the 734 during the latter, but stick with the 734 year round to simplify things. Either would work, however I prefer the power of the 734. As breezy mentioned, the 734 has a nice combination of power and relatively softer tip.

Not sure. I'm just happy that the DX745 came out.Pegasus wrote:

Nope, NOT a MN Thing, I rarely use rods less then 7', I have the opposite reaction, can't stand how shorter rods feels after using longer ones. This just feels dirty as I type it.....blakjack23 wrote:Maybe its MN thing Bob, but I like shorter rods too. Anything over 7' just doesn't feel as good to me. But I agree, 3 power is the way to go on original post!

That is funny stuff HellaBass. I am a west coaster, and I remember maybe 8-10 years ago I bought a 6' 6" rod and my buddies were laughing about it. Of course now that is the shortest rod I use.

Re: Which Dobyns Champion for...?
Nothing wrong with shorter rods, I have a cr721 and a cr722 and really like them both. Fish whatever rod length your comfortable with, fishing is supposed to be fun. I have rods 6',6'8",6'9",7', 7'3" and would like to try the 8' 805CB RM.Bob Ellis wrote:I suppose it would really annoy you guys when I outfshed you with my current, old-fashined setup. A CR724 bought second-hand and a sweet little Cardiff 200 reel.
I use all of these rods and they all have there place.
Thanks for the epiphany captain obvious
