Dobyns DX705c vs Loomis BCR 855 GLX

Post by dr14 » Sun Feb 27, 2011 4:14 am

Looking at one of these as a pitching /casting t-rig rod around heavy cover with 20# fluoro and 1/4 to 3/8 oz weights plus the weight of the bait. I have a BCR 875 GLX which is pretty stout but zero experience with Dobyns. Any input appreciated.

No experience with Dobyns but I have the 855 in mossyback and GLX. It will handle the weights/line you want to use no doubt. It's a great pitching rod, nice tip, plenty sensitive and monster backbone. But ultimately the choice is yours.

I have the 855. It is an awesome rod with a lot of power. I tend to throw the 1/2oz+ jig on it. Highly recommend it.

The DX705c is too stiff for the 1/4 to 3/8 range, I just got a DX704 and thats better suited for that weight.
As far as Gloomis in the 1/4 to 3/8 range I really like the NRX 803.
Thanks for the epiphany captain obvious

I've owned BCR855 in the past. I didn't like it for lures less than 3/8oz plus plastic (t-rig). Just didn't load the rod and/or give me the feel I was looking for when pitching/casting.

That being said, IMO, the 5 power Dobyns doesn't load well below 3/8oz plus plastic. Too bad TT lost all the threads on the DX745. All I said about that rod would apply to the DX705 too.

As far as alternative choices, in the BCR series, I'd consider the BCR854 since you want a powerful rod. My personal choice would be to go with the DX744. If you prefer a 7' rod, go with the DX704.

I love the BCR 855 GLX! I often use it in a very similar way - 20lb FC with a pegged beaver or paca craw around heavy wood cover - pitching and even some light flipping and it works like a charm. Even a pegged paca craw with a 1/4 oz tungesten weight isn't too light to fish with the 855 when paired with a quality reel for pitching. I can only hope they make the NRX in this version, but the GLX is amazing too. I love this rod for 3/4 oz football jigs in deeper water too, and it makes a wicked toad rod believe it or not! This is one of the best BCR GLX rods out there. Good luck with your choice 8-)

Yeah dead on. I will add that I like this rod because I fish a lake with a lot of docks and I can use it to flip and fish the deep water between docks without having to break out the flippn' stick. Over the last year I have moved up a power when fishing the GLX line. I actually like 855 over the 854 for jigs. I pretty much use the 855 for jig, 854 for big worms (7"+), and 853 for my finesse setup (light jigs, shakey heads/ small worms). It just seems to fit my style better.
