Rod and reel storage in between trips

Post by capt1fish » Wed Oct 25, 2017 8:30 pm

Looking for suggestions. Mostly towards reels....

How do you store your rods and reels between long periods of use? Do you just keep on rack and let it gather dust or do you have a storage solution? I’ve seen soft sided Cabelas and BPS reel cases. Ever try those?

It doesn’t help that I own more combos than I need and I’ve never been one to favor minimizing to “multi use” rods. So most of gear sits idle for various parts of the year as I cycle different seasons, techniques or fisheries.

Currently, I break reels down and place them back into factory reel boxes and store in bins. Rods get a sleeve and are stored on a vertical rack. Everything stays clean and ready. Kinda OCD but they stay in better condition.

What do you do, if anything at all?

I use the Cabela’s reel bags to store my reels. Very convenient.

Rods are kept in Stik Jackets.

I may keep some lower end combos together, and put a reel cover over the reel, and a Stik Jacket on the rod.

Once reels are washed, dried and re-oiled they go back into their factory drawstring bags. Then into a large yellow clam box alike a pelican box which has a few large silica desiccant bags and sheets of VCI paper.

For travel in the car i have a couple of those neoprene reel bags - they cop a flogging and close tightly keeping sand and dust out - however if the reel is put back in wet they dont breath at all...

Rods go back in their bags or into a rod sleeve.

Well, my rods are stored about 5 months each year seeing how the lakes are frozen during that time.

I usually stand my rods in a stand with rod sleeves. For the reels, I will clean them, and then store them with a reel cover in a box.

Huh, now I feel bad just keeping my combos together on the rack. I do keep covers on the rods and reels, but you guys are making me feel neglectful.

Same here, but I enjoy playing with them from time to time over the winter. I'll put combos together and practice flipping into Tupperware and skipping under the couch. Keeps me from going insane haha.

I just bought the Cabelas reel bag just for a trip that I did a week back to Guntersville. Got the bag to transport reels on the plane with me. I must say, it helps to keep the rods on the rack easier without the reels on them. So, my reels are in the bag, the rods are on the rack. When I go fishing, I put the combos together Im gonna need for the given type and area Im gonna fish. Hey, at least it makes me tie a fresh knot.

I store rods and reels on a large vertical 'turn table' style rod rack I bought a few years back. Typically have my Cole's Rod Socks on them as well.

When I get home I take my reels off put them in reel covers and they get put in a drawer. I do this every trip. My combos do not stay together unless I have one I use to fish a local pond.

I use cole rod socks and tackle warehouse reel covers in transit and when stored on rack at home.
