There is a big difference between the light CR 721 and the medium heavy 803. If you are wanting to go finesse, a medium heavy rod isn't going to do it. Invest in a finesse reel whether the Alphas Air, Scorpion BFS or a used pixy variant. And find a light rod whether Gloomis, Megabass, MajorCraft or something else.

Anybody have any experience with those?

I have not used the two first rods (benkeki, hyuga). I guess they have a fast action (?), which you should be looking for if you want to throw poppoers and plastics.

I have the 782 N-One BF, which I am very happy with for my searun brown trout fishing.
Be aware that the N-One series of BFS rods have a soft tip and a more moderate action, which is fine for crankbaits and inline spinners and such - but not ideal for jigs and plastics and poppers. Also note that the rod is spiral wrapped, which you may like / may not like.

What species are you going to be targeting, what weight of baits will you be throwing and what are you looking for in a rod? An UL rod like Trout rod will cast 1/8 oz poppers and sub 1/8 oz plastics really well but is not going to have the sort of power and backbone an UL BFS stick is going to have. If you're targeting bass I recommend an UL BFS stick like a Majorcraft Volkey 65UL or something similar.

Yeah, something around these weight limits (maybe even a bit lighter at some point). Bass is the primary species, at times I would like to go for trout as well.

As a Majorcraft fan I've been curious about the Benkei now that the Volkey is gone. I think a Majorcraft L powered BFS rod is the ideal BFS starting point. As a guy who fishes both a 68L and 65UL Volkey I think that the 65UL is better suited to 1/8 oz poppers and under 1/8 oz total weight plastics/jigs plastics. Even then the 65UL is fairly stiff and doesn't cast those baits as well as a Trout rod but has much, much more power making it better suited to fishing for bass around cover.

I'd get the Benkei and fish it for a season or two as a starting point. If you also want something lighter in power then you'll have plenty of time to collect your thoughts and decide if you want an UL BFS or Trout rod in addition to the L Benkei.

I am about to pull the trigger on a BFS set up (assuming I can sell my Metanium).

I am wondering which reel to pair it with:

Options that i am considering:

* Aldebaran BFS (light and compact, price is ok)
* Calcutta Conquest BFS (incredible machinery and robust, salt water safe, price is of course something to swallow)
* SV103 (that I have) with a BFS Spool -RCS BAITCASTING SV SPOOL 1012 SV G1 (probably the best bang for the buck. I just want to avoid spending a good amount of money on BFS and then have to update the reel eventually, given that the I could not fully leverage the potential here).


What do you guys think?

I like the DIY spools in my T3 SV and T3 1016.
As mentioned previously, I have not enjoyed using the DIY spools in the SV103. Have any of you guys used the combo?
Yesterday, I fished for several hours with the SV103 and RCS 1016 SV G1 and it was fantastic. I mainly used 1/4 oz spinners but also some 1/8 oz. I my hands the SV103 with standard spool does not cast very far (compared to my other reels) but that changes with the RCS G1 spool.
I do not know if the 1012 version performs as well, but I guess it does.
Thus, IMO you will like a RCS spool even if you do not fish with ultra light lures.
If you happen to dislike the spool then I think you will find many potential buyers (myself included).
If you go below 1/8 oz then get a BFS reel.
Yes, the Conquest BFS is expensive, but you will love it :-)

Theres an 09 aldebaran on here for sale for 280, some bearings and a ktf spool should be great..
Ian tuned mines and I like it, I was using kreit football heads with 8lb test and trick worms getting great distance.
