Fish finder help

Post by BRONZEBACK32 » Wed Mar 22, 2017 9:23 am

Looking for a new one, I don't need maps or even GPS.

Basically I've narrowed it down to 3 specific models.

The Garmin striker 7sv, what I like about it is the chirp with down imaging and side imaging it also goes
up to 800 KHz on the clear vu and down vu.

The Humminbird Helix 7 Chirp SI GPS G2, I like everything about this except it does not have 800 KHz but
it has a 455 kHz: 420-520 kHz.

The 3rd is the Humminbird Helix 7 DI, it has a higher frequency (800 KHz) for its down imaging but it does not have
side imaging....I kinda want side imaging.

Right now I have a older Humminbird on my boat, so if I did go with Humminbird I would not need to drill new holes in my boat.

Thoughts please.

I'm getting the Garmin 7sv. I also dont need GPS or maps. I fish local reservoirs from several boats so I need a portable fish finder.I'm also getting the garmin portable kit. I have an old Lowrance x96 that I've been using for almost 10yrs. I wanted to try something different and for the price, I dont think it can be beat.

What they're saying about how the image is formed might be true, but it looks a lot like the sensitivity on the garmin is turned down a lot compared to the lowrance, which would also explain the lack of detail! Hard to know from the video.

I just bought the Garmin 7SV and it should be in this coming week. Its my first side view fish finder and I'm excited to use it. should be a BIG upgrade over my Lowrance X96. I'm still learning, or at least trying, to understand how to fully use these things.

Check your transducer and make you have the GT52 and not the CV.
Garmin changed it after a lawsuit, I heard the GT52 is the better choice.

For what it is worth, I'm selling my Helix G2 7 SI. I didn't find the side imaging to be useful. I'm going back to a Raymarine Dragonfly 7. I've tried Humminbird, Lowrance, and Garmin. The image quality on the Raymarine are much better in my opinion. My guess is that if you spend more money and get a 800 MHz side scan with a better transducer, you would get something out of this technology.

I got the 7 G2 SI but went with the HDSI transducer, its better then stock but right now I'm having a few issues
with the screen blacking out after I go on a run of about 38 mph, once I come off plane is when it usally happens and it stays that way until I turn the unit off and then back on....frustrating.

Have you tried hooking up the fish finder to a dedicated battery?

Yes. My fish finder and electric start for motor are hooked up to a tractor battery.

Check pt 1 re: electrical.

I'd consider rewiring to try to eliminate/isolate the issue. Wire to a dedicated battery, as in its the only thing connected to the battery. Or maybe the battery for the live well.
