I was taught this during a flyfishing course in the early 80s by the instructor who was a retired Major and stuck a fly in his thumb for the demonstration.

I've used it on myself a couple of times - pushing down the eye of the hook is crucial so that the tug does not rotate the hook but pulls it out along the line of the point.
