Cabela's Grand Opening...Allen, TX

Post by Texas_bullet » Thu Apr 14, 2011 9:41 am

New Cabela's opened this morning in Allen,TX. Only, it didn't just open....there were interminable speeches outside while thousands stood waiting for the doors to be opened. People started chanting "let's go, let's go". Nope, still more delays. ](*,) The giant shopping mall parking lot was full up to a half mile away from the store. I looked more closely at the mailer and decided to pass. I realize that their milestone anniversary was something they wanted to make a big deal. I don't think anyone but management cared all that much. I won't make the 25 mile drive again cause of the cost of gas. Too many Dick's and Academy stores closer in.

:-({|= lol so drive to the Fort Worth store. You metroplex people are all alike. A retail mall every 100 yards in a 40 mile x 40 mile radius, TWO Cabela's now and TWO Bass Pros and still complain about no retail therapy opportunities. Seriously, I used to live there up till a couple of years ago. I was 20 minutes to the Ft. Worth store, 20 mins tops to the Grapvine BP. hog heaven. Now the absoute closest Cabela's is 5 1/2 hours in Mich or WV, the PA store is 7 hours, now that is untouchable with the cost of gas. Have a Gander Mt. about 45 mins away that is about as big as a drug store and just as worthless. Now that is retail therapy deprived! The ONLY saving grace is we're in NY but right on the PA border. There isn't a Cabela's in NY so therefore there is no sales tax on on-line orders. So if I'm careful and wait with my wishlist until a free or $5.00 shipping special comes alone, I can actually get anything cheaper than walking into a store someplace with free shipping and no sales tax. Aren't you guys up to about 8.25% sales tax now? That's what it was when we left. Mich and PA are 6% sales tax. We're at 7.75% and about to go to 8%, so glad I don't pay the tax on the on-line orders.

Anyone know if they have plans to open a Florida store?

On one hand I'm kind of surprised Cabela's doesn't have a Florida store, since there are about 4 Bass Pros and there is tons of fishing plus population centers on both coasts. But if you take a look at the Cabela's website to see store locations, they don't have a single store in that 9 state Southeastern section of the country. Why? who knows. Driving around the country I've noticed that Gander Stores are twice as large in many locations in the South, real mega stores, as Gander stores they've stuck a few places in the north. You could fit 4 Erie PA size Gander stores into one Gander Store that I was in in Jacksonville. Maybe they don't want to compete. I can't believe the State Business climate is bad in all 9 states in the SE. Cabela's doesn't have a store in NY State, but I can understand that. NY State's business climate is terrible. NY State is literally run by New York City socialists who don't mind bleeding everyone dry, businesses and regular resident taxpayers.

For anyone who is used to buying from Cabela's online or through the catalog, the retail stores are a huge disappointment. The stores just don't (can't) carry the selection of equipment you find in the catalog. There are 2 stores inn the Chicago area neither of which has any selection especially on the higher end gear. They often don't even stock some of the items that are featured in the sale papers that I get in the mail a couple of times a week.
I'll still go in and poke around when I'm in the neighborhood, but I wouldn't drive any distance out of my way to go to one.

-No offense but, DUH  It would be utterly impossible to stock, maintain, and sell ALL of their items.

But is visiting a store actually a disappointment? For me it wasn't. Of the many Cabelas I visited from around the country, the Midwestern states were the best. They were like theamparks; each store was a microcosm of the hunting and fishing lifestyle... for crying out loud, you could eat a legit breakfast, lunch, and dinner inside some of those stores! However, that is my point... they are a tourist attraction more than anything. And for the locals... yeah, it must kinda suck.

Oh, and I've been to the Chicago and surrounding stores - they do stink in comparison to the western ones.

Here's a pic comparing store locations for chits n' giggles:

Cabela's is rubbish...Gander is even worse!

Last time I shopped at Cabela's the chick didn't know what to do with my rewards card  , and that was the last time I bought something there which was about 2 years ago.....

Have three Gander within driving distance and 2 Cabela's near by and I don't even go there. I like to buy stuff the not all the boats will be using on the lakes here. ;)
I will NEVER sell another 3:16 swimbait again!

Yeah, we big city boys are pretty spoiled. That is not an accident. We choose to live in an area where quality of life is really great. Availability of top notch medical care, great schools (Highland Park ISD), dining and entertainment are first rate. To be fair, the Fort Worth Cabelas has a decent fishing dept., and the Bargain Cave always has good stuff. However it is an hour drive, so no go. Gander Mountain is an hour drive...never been there. And yes, sales tax in Dallas is 8.25%, but there's no state income tax. I mail order big ticket items and avoid the tax.

We lived in Southlake for 11 years. My wife worked in Los Colinas. Moved East in '09. Actually we bought our place here in '07. Completely aware of it all. "quality of life" except for the traffic, unless you have a death wish. lol My wife was just back for 5 days a couple of weeks ago, to her long lost retail heaven. ouch! I didn't bother going. We have friends near Valley Ranch she stays with. In return for being retail deprived now, we live on a lake, two boats, I can drive to the nearest couple of villages and encounter maybe 2 or 3 other cars, no multi-lanes unless I get up on the interstate. In the summer boat to restaurants that have docks for lunches or dinners, fish whenever without making a big project out of it. Probably the biggest downside besides no retail is it's a hike from any airports. We were spoiled 20 mins from DFW. Different life but life is good.
