Post by kirby » Sat Mar 04, 2006 9:56 pm

Im new to fly fishing. right now im putting my rig together for the very first time..
I have a pflueger medalist 1495 reel
scientific angler 9ft 6wt rod
3m fly line
my tippet is 3m 6lb 3X
what do i use for a leader???
i have stren original 4LB 6LB 8LB lying around. can i use any one of them??
how long should the leader be??
oh ya, and i didn't put anough backing on, so my fly line came up about 1/2-3/4 inch from filling the spool. is that gonna give me problems when i fish????

help me, I dont know what the hell I'm doing..

this will be my first of a million questions I will post this season
thanks
p.s. I got the medalist 1495 today at walmart on sale for $9 is that a good deal?

9 foot leaders are good. If they taper they are even better. Mono if your dry fly fishing fluro if your nymphing or streamer fishing.

Having a spool under spooled is better than over spooled for fly line.

Attach your tippet to your leader with blood notes and make sure your leader is tapered, it jus cast better.

Your reel seems like a good deal. I would not trust it on a fish however so try to use your hands more so than your reel for larger fish. I like Sci Anglers. so good rod.

feel free to pm me for more questions I am on and off

Happy fihsing!
