Uhh... Trout Opener anyone?

Post by Brookie » Sat Apr 26, 2003 9:57 pm

Ok, I don't know about you guys, but it was a blow out where I am.
The rain destroyed this years opener. Water levels are high,
snow at some area, high winds.

Did anyone have a good opener?

Sorry, but recent rains and knowing the crowds would likely be in full effect led me to stay indoors re-organizing my gear, and tying some new patterns.

I intend to get out after this next storm when the first wave of anglers downsizes and I can get to a stretch of water with less pressure.

Most of the rivers were high and dirty but there were a couple that were teaming with rainbows. The day before the opener, one river had like 6-7 rainbows passing every minute. The local natural resources office counted over 3000 for the day. However, by the time i got there, the bites were slow and i only got a brown and a couple rainbows.

I usually use spinners like the deluxe panther martins or fresh roe.

Buzz, what's your technique with flies? I have a couple flies that I've tried using but with limited success.

Whether I'm throwing dries or nymphs, I try to get my fly to drift downstream drag free as if it were natural food in the trout food chain.

Think of it as a conveyor belt and I'm just trying to match what is already there. I'm not very knowledgeable about fishing flies with spincasters, but I have seen it done.

Since trout eat flies (natural insects) more than any other item (eggs, minows, or power this and power that) hook ups can be quite frequent if you are in the right spot at the right time.

The key is to look under rocks to find the larvae that is already hatching and be very observant of what bugs are on the water. "Match the Hatch"
Talking with the local guide or shop usually is prety reliable.

Tight Lines,
