Favorite fly rod and why??
Re: Favorite fly rod and why??
Ok thanks for the clarification. I've never heard of that setup.
Usually, it goes backing, shooting line, shooting head, tip, leader/tippet.
I'm going to try that out!

The interesting discussion is going on and I felt all you have great knowledge about fishing rods. I must try Sage Xi3 fly rod for fishing. Great Civivrr! that’s really useful for all new anglers.
Re: Favorite fly rod and why??
The Xi3 is a solid lineup, but like any series of fly rods there are some rods within the series that cast better than others. Try before you buy if possible!

Sage BASS II Largemouth with Waterworks Lamson Speedster. I love this combo. Throwing big hair balls is so much easier with the short stubby rod. Would highly reccomend this series for big fly lovers.

Orvis Helios 2 . 9' 10 weight 3 7/8 oz .
Using a not too agressive 'pike' shooting line soley for muskie. Makes casting big flies a breeze.

Sage LL 4711-2. Just a perfect rod for many things.
Re: Favorite fly rod and why??
Orvis Helios 2 905-4 Tip Flex that I bought for a little over $300 and its essentially brand new is becoming my favorite (with my Lamson Litespeed 2 that I bought in 2011). Works for waters around my area well...oh and then there's my Winston Passport 590-4 and Orvis Hydros 865-4 Mid Flex too...they are great rods as well...

Wow, that was 2014...how time flies.DarkShadow wrote:I would have to go with my Echo Carbon, 3 weight, 7'6".
I'm still wet behind the ears as far as fly fishing goes, and ended up starting out using a low end Sage. The rod was not very forgiving for a novice caster. But, when I purchased by Carbon, the slower action made all the difference in the world, and I could feel the exact moment the rod was loading up to begin my forward motion.
The reason why my 7'6" 3 weight is my favorite is just because of how much use it gets. In SoCal, our few streams/creeks have canopies of willow and other riparian trees which makes having a 9 foot rod a headache.
My favorite rod now has to be my 8'6" Hardy Zenith 4 weight, paired with my Lamson Litespeed 1.5.
After venturing out to bigger water, and having to present delicate size 20 BWOs most of the time, the Hardy excels in placing these tiny flies in the exact spot you want them to.
I still love my Carbon, and it does get a lot more use than the Hardy, but the Zenith is hard to put down.
Re: Favorite fly rod and why??
I love my Scott Radian 854. It has better feel than any fast rod I've ever thrown, works pretty well in close, and can turn around and throw the whole line. Also love the full wells grip. Rods I'm looking forward to adding that will probably eventually top my list: Epic Fastglass 686 and Burkheimer 793. A real dark horse in all this is my Fenglass 704--it's just smooth and effortless.
Re: Favorite fly rod and why??
can't be done. it is like choosing a favorite child. i can't pick one. 8' 5 wt fiberglass i built(Angler's Roost). my first Sage 5 wt(DS). an older ORVIS 5 WT. llbEAN 7 wt. dennis stone FEThomas special 4/5 wt-currently building it. the 10' 5" 5 wt(sold as a 4 wt blank) Frankenrod i put together.
if i could only take/have one it would be the Sage DS 5 wt. because it gives me the tightest loops with what i call my cast(others may ask me if i need help). i always think of patrick f. mcmanus when i throw flies. LOL.
i am pretty sure there is a lot of second guessing on faves listed.

Re: Favorite fly rod and why??
Orvis Small Stream Special. 7' 5 wt. It was my first nice flyrod. Slow, I can feel it bend into the grip....I just think of where I want the fly and that's where it goes. Not good for big trout, but it really lives up to its name and is great for the trout I normally go after...if I'm fishing where there is a probability of larger fish, I'll use a rod with more backbone. Second favorite is a Sage LL389.
Ooops....just noticed the age of this thread! Sorry!

RL Winston Tom Morgan Favorite. Love the slow action of the IM6. This may have some reason behind my board name.
