Swimbait rod recs for 1-4oz, under 7’7
Looking to get my first swimbait rod. I was originally going to do the levante leviathan, but since I only plan to throw 1-4oz, primarily 1-3oz, I’m wondering if it makes more sense to go with a lighter powered rod so I can pair it up with a 200 sized reel. Biggest bait I plan to throw is a Deps bull shooter 160 which is 3.6oz. Pretty much everything will be from 1.5-3oz. Ms slammer, slide swimmer 175, jointed claw 178, citizen 6”, mag draft 6-8”.
I’m in the northeast so the biggest bass I see are 6-7lbs.
I need a rod under 7’7 for storage purposes. I was looking at the Daiwa Tatula 7’3 swimbait rod. Not sure what else might be out there that I’m missing. I’d like to keep it under $250-300 if possible.
What should I be considering?

up to 4 ounces will be tough... up to 3 ounces, you enter into the realm of that JDM spec of 7' to 7'2" sticks that can do it all, but most if not all of those will be out of your price range.
Legit Designs's WSC72H+ is only rated to about 1.25 ounces, but can easily handle baits up to 3 oz:

Evergreen's RCSC-78XH is one inch longer than you want but can handle those baits and is within your budget:

Those are the two that come to immediate mind.

The USDM Destroyer Mark 48 is my rod for this range, but it’s 7’8”, $400+ and the series is discontinued That said, if you can find one (I bought mine from Cal) it’s the perfect stick for what you’re looking for. 1-5oz dedicated SB rod with great looks and sensitivity.
Dobyns has the DC 795 SB, a Champions XP 7’9” rod for 1-5oz that’s in budget.
Both are a bit longer than your 7’7” target

I’m a huge fan of my tequila baccarat from megabass for this weight range. It’s short at 7’ but as a kayak angler and bank beater this comes in handy a lot. It will fish many conventional applications well too which can be a big plus to some. Great with jigs and bigger hook soft plastics(4.8” bull flats ect)Super versatile stick. I have a lil chorizo from toxic I weight down that is a little over 4.5 ounces and this rod still handles it on an overhead bomb cast all day. At first I was nervous about this but after a few casts I knew she could handle it. Casting distance for me is not a problem compared to my longer rods little less distance but not to the point it bugs me at all. It’s feather light too which reduces fatigue chucking a big baits all day.

The Tequila baccarat is out of the price point you mentioned($500 retail) so I apologize for that. If you were willing to go above your stated budget then I wouldn’t hesitate if you can find one of these rods. Again suuuuper stick!!!!

I have a thing lately for short big bait capable sticks. I do a lot of tossing of 1-3 oz swimbaits around docks and cover while seated in a kayak. I'll pitch them them from an XXH Valkaryie when in my boat. That stick will pitch a 5" 3D Bluegill like its a senko.
For the short rods you'll have to see if they are a good fit for you. I have the 72H+ Wild Side and it can cast 4 oz but don't like to. Over 3 oz and you can't cast that weight like a regular bass bait using my arms and wrist which is what this rod is good for. It has a normal bass rod length and handle. Once I get to 3.X oz and up baits I have to bend and send using the rod to do the work. I can't fire off cast low flat casts with a lot of wrist action like I can with normal bass baits and sub 3 oz big baits. The issue is that your short big bait sticks are going to have short handles and while this is great for tossing baits around cover and keeps the handle out of the way, they are too short for the kind of bed and send casting required to throw the heavier stuff. Handle length is going to be another componet to consider on your rod quest.

Bringing this back for personal reasons...looking to upgrade my Dobyns Champion 795SB into something lighter in physical weight for throwing 6" Magdrafts, Slideswimmer 175s, and the like.

If it's within your budget range, the Luxxe Efreet B76XH-R weighs 4.515 oz and plenty of power up to 4oz.

If you are willing to spend the money, the new destroyer evoluzion white python F7-76ti goes from 3/8-4oz. More of a softer rod compared to the mark 56 imo

I no longer own this rod, but it's about 1" longer than my B74XH-F, which is ~ 12 3/4" from the front of the reel seat trigger.godshippy wrote: ↑Mon Dec 11, 2023 5:12 pmDo you know what the handle length is? does it have a traditional swimbait handle length?dragon1 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 11, 2023 5:20 amI no longer own this rod, but it is slightly shorter than a traditional big swimbait rod. I still have the Efreet B74XH-F and it's about ~ 12 3/4" from the front of the trigger. The B76XH-R was about an inch longer in the rear handle IIRC.

So it's shorter handle length than a traditional big swimbait rod

I ended up purchasing a Leviathan Omega Swimbait Heavy from TW through the sale.
It's a bit longer since it's 8', but it has a nice parabolic bend do it. It bends deeper down the blank than a Dobyns Champion 795SB.
Only issue that I found is that the handle is made up of 2 pieces and they don't align up properly--you can see that the top half of the handle hangs lower than the bottom half.
Other than that the rod is cleanly built and the NFC blank feels awesome.
I contacted Leviathan and they said someone will get back to me on it...we'll see where this goes. It shouldn't affect the performance of the rod, but seeing how I spent $300 I feel like it should be clean and consistent.
