SB reel question

Ok so I have a curado 201dpv that is in mint condition, that is just sitting in the box. Im thinking bout getting another Swimbait stick for lures under 2 oz. I was wondering if u guys would consider using the 201dpv for this application? Im planning on using braid for this combo. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It will work fine. Just watch your line capacity.

Yep 200 d is bullet proof. Totally fine at 2oz's IMO
That 7.1 ratio can be fast for most baits though. But they do come in 5.1

The 201 DPV that he mentioned is the 5:1. The 201 DHSV is the 7:1. Great reels. Ive got the 301 DSV in the 6:2:1. They also have a JDM version that is the 201 Speedmaster 7:1. But comes with a deep spool just like the 300 version. You should check that one out if you have line capacity issues.

The Citica 200D gears can be put in for a mid-point ratio of 6.2:1 or 6.3:1.

Thanks for all the positive input. I ended up selling the Curado and I am now in the market for a Diawa Lexa. Im a true Daiwa guy at heart!!

Good choice ... And I am really happy with the price point:quality ratio that the Lexa seems to provide.

If you want to have fun and not worry, mu luna is great for SB and does a great job. I have a 300 right now but am considering one of the smaller models like a 203 or 253. I have all daiwa right now as well and there a great reel. I have also been looking at a tdz big bait special but have no experience with that reel to recommend it.

If you are a Daiwa guy and have a Zillion use it. I have two I use for swimbaiting with the small and medium soft body(Hudds) and hard bodied and they work just fine with mono or braid.

For the large swimbaits they really can not hold enough large diameter line to fish as sometimes on a long cast they will spool nearly off.

I used a Zillion with braid for large swimbaits and it worked well but I do not like using braid for swimbaits.

Gen 2 premier (6.2:1)with long carbon handle. Straight 30lb braid or sometimes i us 15-17lb sniper leader.

Lots of info on the BBS available with the search function...in both "Big Bait Special" and "BBS". So you may have to sift through some posts on ball bearing upgrades for Daiwas.

BBS is an MG framed LP that can work for swimbaits, but around 4-5oz is max with what I would use it for. Standard spool with bearing upgrade + carbontex is fine...no need for a HLC Zillion spool or 100M spool if you are tossing 2oz + baits with it.

Since this post i did a lot off looking around and i no longer think this is a good option. I read the review on TT and they had not a lot of good things to say about it. I will stick with the Luna in 203 or 253. Love my 300.

There are mixed reviews of the BBS...it was an anomaly and built late into the TDZ run. Once Zillions and other "heavier duty" LP reels became available, it was bound to not succeed.

I sold mine to replace it with a Z2020H...mostly for more cranking power, faster IPTs and a more robust frame. This said, my BBS was a fine performer on the MBR 844 GLX that it was mated to for lures upwards of 1.25 oz (granted it could handle more). I did upgrade the handle/knobs, spool bearing, Zillion HLC spool, and drag, however the stock spool casts very well with a 3/4oz or heavier bait.

FWIW, my BBS had more cranking power than a 100 TE GT (and better IPTs and was smoother), and was comparable to a 200 TE GT or CVZ 200A...this said, a lower gear ratio reel in this same size will generally always generate more torque on the crank.

Last time I checked, Bronzefly had this BBS...don't know if he still has it/parted it out, or not?
