Swimbait Rod Recommendations

Post by senkoman85 » Sat Sep 29, 2007 8:25 pm

Just picked up a brand new Daiwa Millionaire CV-Z253LA. Not sure if this will be kept or re-sold, but I'm going to give it a try.

I'm looking for a swimbait rod to throw Mattlures Bluegills, 6" Trout baits, mission fish/basstrix style baits, ect. All soft plastics. I have the 7'11" Crucial XH for my hardbaits.

Right now I use my flippin stick, 7'6" H telescopic and it does the job, but looking at getting another swimbait rod anyways.

If at all possible, I'd like a shorter stick. 7 to 7'2" or so would be great. Also, U.S. Market rods only. I'll spend the money if its worth it, but I'd rather keep it below 200 dollars.

Any suggestions??

why not have one built if you want something specific to your liking and US made.

If you want something less than $200, the Crucial 5 - 8" Swmbait rod is your best choice. If slightly over the $200, check out GLoomis' offerings

I have a Powell and its wonderful ($199); I also just got another rod: Okuma Guide Select 7111MH ... (its 7'11" but 15" of its handle so its eacy to whip a bait) I like it! It is definitely different in its handle design, but you have no problems chunkin Matt's Blue Gills and its tip is soft enough for mission fish as well. I even used it in my last tournament for my Carolina Rig and it felt real nice... whats even better.. it is only $99 bucks ($125 if shipped to you) It is an IM 8 blank and specifically designed for swim baits. Matt Servant from Matt Lures uses it himself. I paired it with a Shimano Calcutta 400 and swap out w/ new Curado 300 DSV. hard to beat!

Let us know what you get and how it works for you.

US made only is gonna limit you big time...one of the only rods I can think of would be the Rogue 796. ...a friend of mine has it and really digs it for throwin' Mission Fish up at Clear Lake. Or maybe the St. Croix TBC79HF. I'd highly recommend the Powell 7'11 MH or Okuma 7'6 MH you get alot for the money.

Me too. I have the Powell 7.11 H and the Okuma 7.6 MH, they have me cover all swimbait lures.

ahh I see.......that being said you could look at the Dobyns or Powell 734 or 735 both would work as dual purpose rods...frogs/pitchin'/smaller swimbaits I know guys that use these and love them!

I use the Crucial Swimbait rods in 7'11". Have the mh, h, and xh. Really do not need all three and they are under $200 each. I went the custom rod route one time and I like and think Shimanos are just as good as least for me.
