Stella 2500 FE Knob Replacement

Post by i_am_R2 » Fri Feb 08, 2019 3:12 pm

Hi Bantam1/TT,

Is there a barrel/septon type knob that is a direct replacement for the stock T knob on a Stella 2500 FE? I tried one off a Stradic FK I think but I couldn't get it shimmed properly and the knob cap would not sit properly either (was able to push it past the top of the knob so it was sunken in).

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

The T knob post is slightly longer and usually will not accept the standard paddle. This is why you probably had issues with a different knob. I am not sure if the handles from a newer model Stella will fit your reel, such as from the FI or FJ model we offer now. I'll ask one of the engineers if he knows.

I have two 2500 FE's and both T knobs were swapped out for more finger friendly knobs. One a Yumea cork and the other Livre Titanium knob.

Not sure what standard knob you were using or trying to apply?

I have a Sustain 2500 FG knob spare that would definitely fit, just not fit in visually...

The engineer responded that the other knobs should work. You may just need to adjust the shims that may or may not be under one of the bearings. I was mistaken with the knob change issue. This was on an older model. Now the posts are the same dimensions for 1000-4000 size Stella handles.

You'd probably remember the Stella handles that had the non replaceable bearings stamped on for life...

The bearings are replaceable. If the bearings are stuck on the handle shaft then it is probably due to corrosion.

Im talking about this Antique. Have been quite a few reels that have had this "for life" bearing on the handle knob shaft.

Thanks Bantam1 and Slazmo for the info! :D Let me try it again, looking at the schematics of all the reels I might have placed the shims in the wrong spot. Will try to place it under the bearing under the screw versus the bottom to see if that changes things.

Slazmo-

I know I could get that bearing off and replace it. I have secret techniques.

R2-

The shims are used to adjust for tolerances in the molded knob. Sometimes they do not require one, sometimes they are placed at the lowest point, sometimes at the top. You just have to play with it and I'm sure it will work.

No amount of reverse threading would allow the extended parts of the outer shaft to move.

You have to crush the bearing and the inner race with a bench mounted vice. That way you can get the bearing off and clean the post. It has to be done carefully so you do not oval the post.
